IN THE KALLIO PARISH CHURCH REGISTER 1) POHJOLA, ILMARI NIKOLAI born 16th of January 1888 in RAUMA arrived to Helsinki Sörnäisten Seurakunta, Sörnäinen Parish Church, in 1919 from Pietarsaari He left this Parish Church i.e. moved away 7th of June 1938 Children 1) POHJOLA, BETTY LILJA born 4th of March 1910 in YLIHÄRMÄ arrived to Helsinki Sörnäisten Seurakunta, Sörnäinen Parish Church, in 1919 from Pietarsaari 2) POHJOLA, OLAVI ILMARI born 27th of April 1911 in PIETARSAARI arrived see previous 3) POHJOLA, ARMAS ALEKSANTERI born 12th of July 1914 in PIETARSAARI arrived see previous Married: Karin Lydia, born 4th of January 1916 in Kotka she came to Helsinki from Kuopio 1933 Children: Raili Kaarina born 11th of December 1937 in Helsink (Paul´s first cousin) we have met Raili SECOND WIFE Hilda Maria Virtanen DIED 4th OF JANUARY 1924 THIRD WIFE Hilda Hirvonen, married 22nd of June 1930 Amanda Alina Sandelin was born 8nd of February 1890, babtized 9th of February 1890 IN THE NATIONAL REGISTER Father ESAIAS JAKOBSON SANDELIN born approx. year 1820 ? Mother SOFIA WILHELMINA " " " " Child ESAIAS WILHELM born 6th of April 1852 in Ylihärmä, Kosola SANDELIN village, baptized 11th of April 1852, died of ulcer 13th of December 1890 Married Liisa Matintytär (Matti´s daughter) b. 7th of June 1851 in Ylihärmä Children 1. JOHAN b. 12.13.1874 Ylihärmä 2. ANNA WILHELMINA b. 9.5.1876 Y. 3. LIISA b.10.29.1878 Y. MARIA b. 8.20.1880 see below 4. MATHIAS WILHELM b. 11.2.1882 Y. !!! 5. HILMA b.26.1.1885 Y. 6. SANNA MARIA b. 5.5.1887 Y. !!! 7. AMANDA ALIINA b.2.8.1890 Y. 1.Sanna Maria moved to Pietarsaari 1st of April 1909 2.Amanda Aliina moved to Pietarsaari 16th of August 1909 3.Anna Wilhelmina moved to Isokyrö 16th of December 1895, moved back to Ylihärmä 10th of November 1902 4.Note, the godfather and mother of Hilma Sandelin were called HAUKKALA, not Hoikkala. They were two of them. Don´t know if there is any connection. Iisak Matinpoika (Matti´s son) Haukkala. Could have given his son name Matti Haukkala. 5.Then I found in the baptized list this: father Esaias Wilhelm Sandelin, mother Liisa. Baby: Maria, b. 20th of August 1880, age of mother 29. She isn’t in the house list as above, could have died young? She was baptized 22nd of August 1880. Just an error in house list? Anyhow the baptized book and register is more credible. So she perhaps had moved or simply they forgot to sign her too. 6. Hilma came to USA in 1904 – Married Matti HOIKKALA. Possibly related to the HAUKKALA listed above. Lilja came in 1922 – lived with AUNT HILMA until her marriage to John in 1928. Then one curious enough note:in the moved in/out register: From Lapua (where I found one Matti Pajuluoma, see my previous message) moved to Ylihärmä 11th of January 1895. (Literally) puolustusta kaipaava mies MATTI PAJULUOMA puolutus=defence, (protection) kaipaava/kaivata=require, need mies=man "A man in need of defence/protection - Matti Pajuluoma" There is a postcard written to Lilja from Liisa Pajuluoma. Matti Pajuluoma, we believe was a man who married Liisa when her husband Esaias died. We believe that the “curious note” above was posted by Liisa and Matti came to her rescue. We would consider it an add in the “personals” and he answered it. In the story about Lilja’s foot, Matti was the grandfather who carried her from the hospital to get proper care for the polio. YLIHÄRMÄ was the place known for the "KNIFE-TOTING ROWDY". Lilja had a very small puukko knife that she brought from Finland. We do not know what happened to it This shows her real belong to "HÄRMÄN HÄIJYT" and the proudness and spirit of her birthplace.. "HÄIJY" is a dialect word. It means much more than nasty, mean. Means from” HÄRMÄ". Everyone in Finland smiles approvingly when someone mentions these guys. Yli-Härmä is a VERY famous village in Finland for the peasants who fought with knives. Puukko-Junkkari. If you ever saw those knives made with hand made blade and the handle in precious wood with ferrule in brass. . Paul has 2 puukko knives and one rapula knife – made especially for hunting and fishing. John liked to tease Lilja about her puukko and wink at her about being one of those dangerous Finns. There’s a very famous song: ISON TALON ANTTI JA RANNANJÄRVI JUTTELI KAHREN KESKEN, TAPA SINÄ KAUHAVAN RUMA VALLESMANNI, NIIN MINÄ NAIN SEN KOMIAN LESKEN. Goes like this: Antti from the Iso Talo and Rannanjärvi were chatting just the two of them, Kill you the ugly sheriff in Kauhava, So I will marry his handsome widow. They were told to terrorize the whole Pohjanmaa Region. Eventually they were captured both of them, they were closed to Vaasa prison, then liberated after their sentence and they became model farmers. This is true story, no legend. If you find Finland’s map, you can look for all these places. Laitila is next to Rauma and Ylihärmä is North from Laitila, quite far away, near Vaasa. On the same level East-West as Pietarsaari,
