 "AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH by Lutheria Loggins:
Louthery Loggins nee Thompson, was borned December 23rd 1870 in Forsythe County, Georgia, in a one room house. I was the daughter of E. A. and N.C. Loggins, my mother before her marriage, Necy Gober. There was ten of us children, eight girls and two boys. We were poor but happy. My parents was very good to us children. I had Christian parents who taught us to go to church and Sunday School, and long winter nights we all would sit around a good log fire and knit and sing old fashion songs, them was good and happy days to look back and think of as I grow older, for my parents are both dead and all of us children are gone but three. I have not got very much education, for we had to work very hard, for my father was a cripple. He was shot in his right arm in the war. We lived in Forsyth County until I was sixteen years old, and then my father sold out and we moved to Jackson County. My mother never was satisfied with our move, but all of the rest was, and me especially, for that is where I met my husband who has been very kind to me, and I have never regretted marrying him, and I hope that he has not regretted marrying me, for we have been good pals for 45 years. It would seem long to some folks, but not to us. We have had our ups and downs, just like everyone else in life, but we have always tried to trust in our Lord for there is a Heart and a Hand that we can always feel but cannot see, for we have always been promised care and protection, and we will always be cared for if we but trust in the Lord. He will direct our way.
I have been sick a good bit. I had one serious operation, so I know how to sympathize with those that are sick and suffering. The Lord has blessed us with four bright children, three boys and one girl which are all grown and married. We love them very much, and I think that they love us in return, or at least we think so. I don't think that life would be worth living if it was not for our children. I think every home is much happyer where there is Children, for Jesus loved and blessed little children, and I think that a husband and wife are more devotted to each other where there is Children in the home, for as I look back on my happy childhood days it brings back sweet memories to me. For children days is the happies days of our lives, for we don't have anything to worry about in this world of trouble and trials, as in the path of life we tread we come to a place where if not carefull, we may fall, and sink in sad disgrace. Some evil habits words and thoughts, some sin, however small may make us stumble. We may fall for it is very easy to be led off in sin, especially when we are young and unthoughtful, for it always pays to do right, for that is what my parents taught me, and I have always tried to do right, and have tried to raise my children as near right as I know how, and I hope that I have not made a failure for when we do all that we can, we can't do anymore. At this writing we have 17 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, one great grandchild died a few days ago, which was the second death in our family, in all of the 45 years that we have been married. So the Lord has blessed us in more ways than one, which we are so thankfull for, for all his blessing, for many dear children have lived and died.
We said goodby at the river side, they diped their feet in the golden stream and faded away, like a lovely dream. I have been trying to serve my dear Lord ever since I was 13 years old, I was converted in Forsyth County, GA, at Old Salem Baptist Church, and was baptied the first Sunday in September, in a pool back of the church by Rev. T.J. Barnwell, that has been 52 years at this writing. So I have tried to live right and to serve my Lord the best that I know how, to serve him. I have been in 4 different states, by my mind runs back to Forsyth County, GA, to my childhood home which I loved so well, for my childhood days is my happyest days of my life so far, and I think of them more and more as I grow older, and I very often think of the little Log School house that stood on the hill, with the wide fire place and slab benches, but the best of all was the good cool spring that was at the foot of the hill, which gave us plenty of good cool water, for the days seemed long and hot in the summer, and cold in the winter, but the boys kept a good fire in the big old fireplace, for we had to stay from 7 in the morning until 4 in the evening, that was long hours to us children. But we injoyed it, for we knew when we got home there would be plenty of work for us to do, we had to carry water a good ways up a hill and a lot of other things that children of today don't have to do, for there is so many more convences now, than there was then, for which I am glad. We knew nothing about electricity or automobiles, radio and a lot of other things too newmerious to mention. If some one had toled me that I would live to wear silk hose I would have made light of them, and would have said "I say silk hose" who ever heard tell of silk hoose but I am wearing them, for we never had any thing but course home knit hose to wear in those days, and there was very few silk dresses, for there was very few that could afford a silk dress. We had no way of going but in wagons or walking, for there was very few people that could afford a buggy in those days, but every body seemed to be happy and every body that could went to church and Sunday School, and we always had a good crowd at church, for there was no joy rideing, and no picture shows to go to, so every body went to church. But now very few people go to church, they had rather go to other places of amusement, where they can have a good time, for it seems like that every body is seeking after good times instead of seeking after Christ, and lost souls, Salvation, riding in fine cars and going to other places of amusement. There has been a great change in the people, now and when I was a girl, 65 years ago. The time changes, and the people change, but God and his word never changes, for he says Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word will not pass away.
At this writing we are liveing in Abbeville, South Carolina, and I like here just fine, for I have so many good friends here, and it is a nice little town to live in. This is next oldest town in South Carolina. We have been liveing here eleven years, 2 of my sisters children has been with us the past 3 months and I will shure miss them when they leave, their father and mother are both dead, they are gone to stay awhile with another one of their aunts. It is bad to be without father and mother both especially when one is so young, as these girls are, but God knows what is best for us all, and we ought not to grumble at his works for we all have our share of troubles in this world, some have it one way and some have it another way, for we can't go through this life on flowery beds of ease, for we have to suffer even as Christ had to suffer.
I love my home and my church and my Sunday School, and I always go to church when I am able. I used to think that I could not miss my sunday school but after I married and my health god bad, I had to miss more than I wanted to, but the Lord knows best for his children, and I don't think the Lord will punish us when we do the best we can, for the Lord is my sheppard I shall not want, he maketh me to lie down in green pastures, he leadeth me by the still waters, he restoreth my soul, he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name sake. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou are with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Then surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." Written by Mrs. M. A. Thompson, the year of 1937.
