Notes
a. Note:   OBIT:
 MRS. SAVANNAH THOMPSON
An unusually sad occurrence of last week was the death of Mrs. Sarah Savannah Thompson, which occurred Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at her home on West Washington Street.
To an eternal home where angels dwell her trusting soul has fled. Every citizen is a participant in the grief that results from the loss of a life that was ever so perfect, and that was such a potent influence for good in church work and especially in her home life, where she devoted the greatest and sweetest part of her life to molding into true Christian characters three dutiful daughters and nine brave and true sons, and greater work has no woman done.
Those who knew her best and loved her most, find it difficult to speak of her without emotion in the freshness of their bereavement and find it hard to realize that her warmhearted fellowship, her cheerful smile and consoling words are no longer a part of the community life.
Thekeynote ofher character was goodness, which flowed in a thousand forms and phases. To all she was a devoted friend and there was a warmth and candor in her quiet disposition which won and retained strong attachments.
Her life was made up of generous deeds and kind acts, being always thoughtful of others. In whatever degree deep and sincere sympathy can mitigate the sense of loss, ossasioned by her death, the circle of her immediate family and friends possess it in an abundant measure, for Gainesville has lost one of her purest citizens, most generous souls, and all deplore the loss of one so pure in thought, act and speech.
Her loved ones are comforted to know that she knew and realized that her twelve devoted children were around her before she breathed her last.
Mrs. Thompson was 69 years of age. She gave her heart to God, and united with Harmony Baptist church at the early age of 17, and later in life with her husband, moved her letter to Oakwood Baptist Church of which she was a member at the time of her death. Her husband preceded her to the grave on September 9th, 1905. She is survived by the following sons:
  D. A., of Tadmore; J. M., of Jefferson; W. A., of Jacksonville, Fla.; C.V., of Gillsville; T.S. and R.L.; of this city; J.S. and G.H. of Atlanta; and G.G. Thompson of Athens, and the following daughters: Misses Polonia and Lelia of this city; Mrs. J. R. Hudgins of Atlanta, together with twenty-seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral services were held Wednesday at 12 o'clock at Oak Grove Baptist Church, for miles South of the city, conducted by her former pastor, Rev. Rufus Robertson and Rev. J.M. Haymore, pastor of the First Baptist Church, where three of her children are members.
Many beautiful floral offerings banked the altar and the church was filled with people who came to pay a last respect to one they knew and loved so well. The burial took place in Oak Grove Cemetery."
This obituary was sent to me by Miss Helen Thompson of Atlanta, Ga. in October, 2000.
