Note:   . In Ben?s very poignant letter, he described his great grandfather?s funeral just before he left for America. Ben was my first cousin and we have the same great grandfather, as did your mother. You & I are first cousins once removed, so Ben was describing your great grandfather?s funeral, after which according to Ben?s letter, Shimon (Ben?s grandfather) ran the baths (Mikvah) in Vissokidvar (Ed. Vissoki dvor; Wysoki Dwor, Aukstadvaris.etc.) Which corresponds with my mother?s account of events that her father later took over her grandfather?s"Mikvan" in Vissoketver, a religious purifying bath for women). My mother exchanged letters with her father in the mid 1930s so he was still alive at that time. (Dorothy Hans)
According to Frieda?s memory of what my mother told her. Uncle Harry (Hessel) (your grandfather) and Uncle Barnett (Berel) came to America at the turn of the century. They came to New York and we don?t know whether their wives came at the same time or were sent for later. (Ed. The families came later through the port of Baltimore). Their wives were related to each other (cousins). The two brothers didn?t like New York and when they heard about Henry Ford?s new company, they decided to go to Michigan. (Ed. According to Aunt Ida they went to London, England first and then to Canada and then to Bay City, Michigan. More research is needed here. They may have made more than one trip before they sent for their wives and children. ) Subsequently, Harry decided to go to California where his Uncle lived (his father?s younger brother Louis Goldberg nee Zlatkovich. (Dorothy Hans)
We saw Uncle Harry when he came to see my mother in 1945. Jeannie went with my mother to meet him at the train station and described how touching it was to see these two white-haired sister and brother who recognized each other instantly after not seeing each other for more than forty years. He was a very high-spirited lively man. (Dorothy Hans)
