Note: i before the War between States. He was married 18 Sep 1853 in Coffee County, Alabama, to Elizabeth Caroline Carroll, daughter of Noah Carroll and Elizabeth Mancill. Elizabeth was born in Covington or Coffee County, Alabama, 4 May 1836, and died in Birmingham, Alabama, 18 May 1917. She is buried in the Beaver Dam Cemetery, near Elba, Alabama. after the death of Daniel, she was married to James Davis. Daniel Highsmith appears to have enlisted in the 8th regiment of Mississippi Volunteers sometime shortly prior to October 18, 1861, on which date he appears on the Company muster roll of Captain J. L. Samson's Company. He died from wounds suffered in the battle at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. According to official war records, he was wounded at Murfreesboro, 31 Dec 1862 and died at the Fair Grounds Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia, 9 Feb 1863.
