Note:   He died on the Lady Pillus at sea, returning from Jamaica.
Hugh's death date is recorded on the 1956 Usher book family tree. I have not been able to find any separate confirmation of the date yet, though tracking down his will might be a worthwhile possibility and could clinch matters.
  The Andrew Usher narrative states:
Hugh went out to Jamaica for the purpose of disposing of some property they had in the island and on the return voyage in the packet, Lady Pillus, he was lost with all on board and this completed their ruin. The unfortunate packet was not heard of for twelve months, when the Master of an outbound vessel stated that he had seen a ship in distress answering the description of the packet, making signals of distress, but it was during the time of the war with France and supposing she had been a privateer making these signals as a decoy, he turned off and left them to perish, for which he was much blamed by the underwriters of Lloyds.

Note:   I have found no trace of her marriage in any Scottish records. Since Hugh lived in London he may have married her there.
Intriguingly this Stevenson family seem to have been acquainted with William Brown in Bankhouse who was the witness at the 1794 and 1797 baptisms of Margaret and James Usher, eldest two children of John Usher who was the older brother of Hugh Usher who married Helen Stevenson. John Usher was at that time tenant of Pirn in Stow parish- might this be how his brother Hugh met Miss Stevenson, perhaps on a visit to his oldest brother's then home?
