  George Hammond (1763-1853) was the first British minister accredited to the United states. In 1795 Hammond became under-secretary in the foreign office. Sent on diplomatic missions to Berlin in 1796 and Vienna in 1799. Hammond retired when Charles James Fox became foreign minister in 1806, but returned upon the appointment of Canning to that position.
