Note: Enlisted USN 18 May 1925 as a radioman. Naval Aviator License issued Aug 16, 1930, as an Enlisted Pilot. Second American to be launched from a catapult. Served aboard the Langley, Lexington and Saratogo Aircraft Carrier. Participated in the search for Amelia Airheart. Involved in early Naval dive bombing techniques and remote guided aircraft. Squadron 3S-VB relocated every six months. On March, 15, 1942 he was stationed at Cape May Naval Air Station as First Lieutenant Squadron Leader. While leading a squadron of Brewster Buffalo's on take off his plane failed to respond to the controls and crashed, killing him instantly. He was 2 days from promotion to Lt/Commander. While stationed at North Island Naval Air Station, San Diego, Calif. in the 1930's he flew against a Marine known as Pappy Boyington in mock dog fights in Grumman F-3-F's. His nickname's were Buss and Abe, Abe due to having broken his nose 3 time in crashes. The Navy had an elite Squadron of Pilots known as the Flying Chiefs, the forunners to the Blue Angles. Pictures exist of three Grumman flying under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Calif. Scholten was one of the three pilots, plane number 2-F-4. April. 10, 1933, search for USS Akron (Naval Airship) Aug. 8, 1936, landed with wheels up.
