a. Note:   Mary Etta Nelson was born April 15, 1897 near Cherry Point, Illinois to Ulyssus Grant Nelson and Ivy Florence Nelson. In 1902, at the age of four, her father moved the family to Madison County, Iowa to join a good friend who had moved there earlier to engage in farming.
 Mary had two sisters - Ethel and Zella and twin brothers Roy and Ray.
 She was baptized at the Winterset Church of Christ and attended Winterset High School.
 In Winterset, Iowa on February 17, 1914 Mary was united in marriage to William Amza Jones. Born to them were three daughters, Florence Ada, Mary Eleanor and Doris Neola and one son Floyd.
 They farmed in that area until the spring of 1928. At that time they decided to follow Mary's parents and move to Minnesota. With Amza riding a railroad car with their horses and farm machinery and Mary at the wheel of their Model-A Ford, the family and their belongings moved to Appleton, Minnesota.
 The spring of 1931, this family moved to a farm in Torning Township.
 In 1937, Mary and Amza added another member to the family when they opened their home to their newborn nephew, Neil Jones, whose mother had died.
 Mary and Amza became members of the First Baptist Church in Benson.
 In 1948 Amza died.
 Mary was married in 1949 to Alfred Ekern. They made their home on Mary's farm in Torning Township. She was widowed again in 1956.
 In 1957 upon the death of her youngest daughter, Doris, Mary moved into the Fahl home to help care for her three granddaughters- Barbara, Linda and Diane.
 After with them for several years, she returned to her farm home where she lived until January 1974 at which time she moved into the Parkview Manor in the city of Benson. She stayed there until a year ago when she moved into the Meadow Lane Health Care center.
 Mary Etta Nelson Jones Ekern died Tuesday, March 27, 1984, three weeks before her 87th birthday.
