Notes
a. Note:   z on the river San. In 1878, they came to New York City. The Ryshpan family in America is descended from this couple. Sheva was a descendant of Gaon Shabsi Cohen (d.1651), who wrote and edited books of codes and commentaries on the Talmud "Mishpah" and "Uridaiah". He called his book "SHACH" from his initials. The Goan is possibly related to Rashi and Maimonides, descendants of Shabsi include Gaon Mose Katz, Rev Yitzhak Katz and Gaon Barish Katz. Yeshayah and Sheva had 7 children in Poland and 2 more in the US. Sheva was well educated and her home was a well known gathering place for scholars of the Torah.
[J. Kahn's notes say she died Dec 8th]
Notice in Tageblatt, December 23, 1917, Translation by Frieda Freilich
Mrs. Batsheva Ryshpan (RIP), a woman who was a descendent of rabbis and was herself learned in the Torah, died at the age of 80.
Mrs. Batsheva Perel, wife of Yeshia Shlomo Ryshpan (RIP), died last Saturday, December 8, 1917, in the home of her daughter Bertha Ryshpan at 150 West 111th Street, New York City.
The deceased was an extraordinary woman, a learned person and an Hebaist. She studied the Talmud in the manner of scholars and was fluent in speaking and writing Hebrew. She was a pious and upright person.
Born in Prshedborsh, Poland, she was a descendent of a prestigious family of rabbis and pious men. She was a great-grandchild of Yeshiale Prshedborsher and the Rodishitzer Rabbi Reb Meyer, blessed be his memory.
Her husband, Yeshia Shlomo (RIP), who died 11 years ago, came to America in 1878. Four years later he brought Mrs. Ryshpan here. She was a great inspiration to her husband, and it was through her wisdom that he was able to achieve a fine position in America. At first, he started in the jewelry business. Then, later, he went into real estate, where he amassed a considerable fortune. He was a very fine Jew and a great philanthropist. He took an active part in organizing many institutions. But he did not take a single step or any undertakng without consulting his clever and educated wife.
The deceased took a great interest in the Yeshivas of New York, which she supported liberally. She respected and admired learned persons. Years ago, when she resided on East Broadway, her home was a well-known place for learned scholars of Torah.
She is survived by eight children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren totalling over 100. Her children include the only son, the well-known Moishe Ryshpan, father-in-law of Rabbi Chiam Moseson,
principal of Yeshiva Chaim Berlin of Brooklyn. There are also seven daughters, Frima Bela, Fannie (wife of Rev. Dubofsky), Tillie, Annie, Bertha (a piano and swimming teacher), Mamie (wife of Dr. Morris R. Cohen, professor at City College), and Sadie (wife of Dr. Hirshdansky, principal of a public school in Harlem).
The funeral was one of the most outstanding. It took place in Machpela Cemetery, Cypress Hills. The eulogy was delivered by Rabbi Moseson and Rev. Dubofsky.
Note:   Yeshayah and Sheva lived in Poland until 1878 in the town of Przedbor
