Note: " in March 1882. He lived and worked with his uncle (Asher Salwen) who had a store on the lower East Side near Yeshaya Ryshpan's jewelery store. While working in his uncle's store as a night watchman, he met and fell in love with Tillie. Joe's Polish name was Soloveitchik. He was naturalized in 1887. He learned English quickly and became a peddler. He later became an insurance broker and had a very large business, especially from his large family. In Grandma Bertha's writing: "the inscription on the headstone of Tillie and Joseph Salwen": "Who were lovely and pleasant in their lives and in their death were not divided." This is from the morning service for the Shabbat. 407 Beverly Road, Brooklyn, NY 1999: According to Bill Hoffberg, when Grampa Joe came to the US at 17 or 18, the bride who had been arranged for him here drowned while he was en route, leaving him unattached. He knew the Ryshpan family somehow (they were much richer than his large family), and one day he came upon a fire and saved Tillie's life. It was love at first sight. Because it was a love match, the dowry was less, and they lived on a shoe-string most of their days. The family's way of helping out was to buy their insurance from him. Theirs was a love match, and there was, therefore, no dowry. I was once told that after their youngest, Bobby, was born, that the older sisters forced their parents to sleep apart. email from [email protected] (Alex Friedlander) 28 Nov 2001: I noticed on a rootsweb site that you have been researching a part of the Salwen family - apparently your grandfather was Joseph. I had been in touch some years back with Bertha Kletiman, when I was researching the family. My particular interest at this point is in Bertha's cousin Ike Salwen who lived in Scranton, PA. He was the son of Moshe by Moshe's first marriage. Ike was allegedly a cousin to a family I have been working on; he was the subject of a visit in Florida many decades ago by Bertha Saulson nee Blumrosen. The Blumrosen and related Shapiro and Reinhertz and Savlan families came from Suwalki gubernia, the same gubernia that the Salwen (Solowejczyk) family came from, although not the same town. Have you done any research into Joseph's siblings, nephews or his antecedents (i.e. his parents and grandparents) that would shed any light on this connection?
