  WORLD WAR II
 When the U.S. declared war on Japan in Dec., 1941 Ray was in training at Camp Bowie, Texas. He volunteered 7 Feb 1941 at the age of 18. On the 13th of April, 1943 he landed in Oran, North Africa with the 36th division. On September 9th they invaded Salerno, His military specialty was Gunner A/T. He was overseas twenty eight months, made two major invasions, was engaged in actual combat for four hundred days, and was wounded twice. Of the 180 men in his company, he was one of 13 who came home. The battles and campaigns listed on his discharge are Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, EAME Campaign Medal with five bronze stars, the Purple Heart with one cluster per G O 369 Hq 36th Infantry Division 4 Oct 44 and an honorable discharge on July 4, 1945.
