Notes
a. Note:   Worked on Railroad laying cross ties when he was 15 years old.
Started working in the oil field at age 16, (1909) probably with
brother-in-law, Jack Burke. We lived wherever he was working in Arkansas (El Dorado) and Texas (Longview) until I started to school at Courtland. He continued working as an oil driller until 1940, when he became ill.
One of his last jobs was drilling off-shore in Louisiana. I remember he stayed in Golden Meadow. When he came home he brought a toe sack full of Oysters, which he ate raw with catsup mixed with hot sauce. He had learned to drink coffee very strong while living there. WR
Nov. 11, 1982 John D. Hanes wrote a letter to me in which he said: " I thought a lot of your father. When I was a boy about 10 years of age, he gave me a knife. And I remember too, he drove his car for my father at times. I recall his big strong hands. Many times I have paused at his grave. As you know this grave is on a hill-top and if it were not for the woods, you could see your old home across the way. He is resting in surroundings he knew and loved as a boy." ( John D. is the son of my father's first cousin, Jennie Bryant. I knew him when I was growing up. He had a grocery store in Queen City. WR
When I was 16 years old my father had had tuberculosis for about 10 years. Our doctor, Joe Nichols ordered streptomycin from the drug company and taught me to give him shots. I boiled the needles and syringes to sterilize them and gave him 5 shots a day for two months. He did improve and lived for 10 more years. WR
