His obituary reads as follows: "The death of Irving Gustave Utschig came unexpectedly on Friday, July 27th. He had been in poor health for a brief time, but no one believed him to be seriously ill. Born in San Francisco November 13, 1896, he was 59 years of age. Mr. Utschig came to Fort Bragg in 1916 to work for the Union Lumber Co. His employment had extended over forty years. He was an authority in the kiln drying of lumber, and was in charge of the hugh kilns of the U.L. Co. ! "One of the greatest baseball players ever to wear a Fort Bragg uniform, Utschig, who was known in the roaring twenties as a home run hitter, held down the shortstop spot on the local nine for many seasons. Baseball fans are still talking about the power-hitting of Utschig, which turned the tide of many a diamond battle during the Marshall regime. He was equally sensational on defensive play, playing errorless ball season after season. ! "He married Mrs. Laura Babcock in Fort Bragg, September 28, 1947, who survives him. He was the eldest son of the late John and Emma Utschig; the father of Mrs. Janet Andreani, Fort Bragg; the step-father of Donald Babcock, Joann Matson, and Alice Holmes, Fort Bragg; the grandfather of 11; the brother of Jeanette (sic) Plate, Harold and John Utschig, all of San Mateo. ! "Funeral services were held at the Chapel of the Robert E. Cain Funeral Home, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock; Rev. Leo W. Reed officiated; Mrs. Emma Cornell was organist.
