Note: ech Republic. Gathered information October 1993. Birth book 2, p. 31; Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) church records. Had his mother's maiden name (Schicker), which was different than what was on his death certificate, which was Schmidt. !IMMIGRATION: Philby's Passenger & Immigration lists and Supplements Index, dated 1983, showed Adolph (31 years old) arriving 1868 and John (22 years old) arriving 1870 at San Francisco, California. The 1900 CA San Francisco Census stated Johann immigrated in 1854; his death certificate calculates it to be 1852; father naturalized. !PASSPORT: Went to Europe on Ship Normannia, leaving New York Aug 14, 1890 and arriving back in New York Aug 22, 1890; Hamberg Passenger List; direct index; Roll 24; BD 36-37. Believe went either now or earlier to Europe with Philo Jacoby to shooting festivals and contests. Mr. Jacoby tells about it in his book, The Rifle, which book I found in the UCLA Special Collections Library. ! Have a copy of Johann's passport application of May 12, 1890. It gives his birthplace, and his physical description. He said on his application that he immigrated on the ship "Maria" from Hamburg in 1853. !MARRIAGE: Could not find mention of it in the San Francisco Chronicle; looked July 1 - Aug 11, 1870. (As of 2003) !CITY DIRECTORIES: First found John in S.F. City Directory 1867-68; and in the San Francisco voter registration. !CENSUS: 1880 California, San Francisco, San Francisco, 9th Ward; taken 4th Jun 1880; ED 107, page 3, line; 120 Park Avenue, dwelling 24, family #31; John Utschig, age 31, shoe store, born Prussia, as wre his parents; with wife Hattie (sic) age 28, keeping house, born Wisconsin, parents both born Baden; and children John, age 8, born California; Lizzie, age 7, born California; Willie, age 6, born California, and Katie, age 2, born California. Johnson, head, , age 58, 2nd marriage, married 1 year, born Ohio, parents both born Ohio, photographer, own business; with wife Kate A., age 38, 2nd marriage, married 1 year, no children, born California, father born Austria, mother born Wisconsin; with father-in-law JOHN UTSELING (looks like, could be Utsching), age 61, widow, born Austria, as were his parents, own income. !OTHER: In the San Francisco Chronicle, Dec. 28, 1896 (Monday), there is an article about great grandfather John Utschig and his daughter "Lizzie" (Elizabeth). They both won medals for sharp shooting. He won the Schuman Diamond medal. ! Johann (John) in 1905, started the Wrights Rifle Club. He once held the world record for the 200 years rifle event. The Club was in existence from 1905-1915. ! John was the President of the Austro-German colony at Austrian Gulch, in the Santa Cruz mountains, Santa Clara County, CA. There was a thriving winery there, but in 1889 the winery was destroyed because of heavy rainfall, causing mudslides, etc. Orchards and vineyards were replanted and the winery rebuilt, but the town finally dissolved. Austrian Gulch was originally written about in "The Ghost Town of the Santa Cruz Mountains," by John V. Young, a newspaper reporter for the San Jose Mercury, San Jose, California.. !DEATH: California Death Cert; District #801; Local Registrar #2903; have a copy. Certificate has incorrect surname for his mother, should be SCHICKER; Kate, child #1 was the informant on the certificate. !BURIAL: Cypress Lawn Memorial Cemetary; Lot 321; Section F; owned by John Utschig; several family members buried there, including Rheude's. !OBITUARY: CA Newspaper, San Francisco Chronicle; May 1, 1926. It reads: "Utschig -- In this city, April 29, 1926, John, dearly beloved husband of the late Catherine Utschig, loving father of Mrs. Charles Benson, John L. Utschig, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown and William G. Utschig Williams, grandfather of Irving, Harold, John L., Jr., George and Jeannette Utschig and Harriet and Doris Brown and great-grandfather of Janet Utschig, a native of Austria, aged 77 years. A member of California Schuetzen Club, Bay City Lodge, No. 71, I.O.O.F., and Harmonic Singing Society. ! "Friends are invited to attend the funeral today (Saturday) at 2 p.m. from the new chapel of Gautner Bros. & Felder, 1965 Market st., at Duboce ave. Incineration, Cypress Lawn Memorial Park. ! "MEMBERS OF BAY CITY LODGE, No. 71, I.O.O.F. -- You are requested to attend the funeral services of our late beloved brother, John Utschig, today (Saturday), May 1, 1926, at 2 p.m. at the Gautner Bros. & Felder chapel, 1965 Market st., at Duboce ave. By direction of the Noble Grand. Mark Celler, Secretary." !OTHER: The earthquake in San Francisco in April 1906 destroyed most vital records; therefore, I have been, and am still, in the process of searching old San Francisco Newspapers for Birth, Marriage and Death dates and other events. California Genealogical Society in San Francisco has helped me with some research.
