  !OTHER: A well-to-do shoe manufacturer in Marienbad, according to the Louis Spuller (whose grandmother was Amelia, this Johann's daughter). He sent his daughters to Vienna to learn to cook.
  !MARRIAGE: Book 1, p. 3 (or p. 98), Marienbad Church Records; age 28, shoemaker, haus #44. As of Jakub Smid, who also found this record, he writes: "Johann Utschig, master shoemaker, son of Nepomuk Utschig, burgher in Einsiedl No. 8, domain of Tepl (Tepla); catholic, 28 years old, single."
  !IMMIGRATED: John and 3 of his children, Adolph (16 yrs old), Johanna (23 yrs old), and Elisabeth (19 yrs old), came to the US 29 Oct 1853; From Bremen and Southampton to New York; Steamer HERMANN.
  !NATURALIZATION: John was naturalized Oct. 25, 1859 in New York County New York. He signed an intent for Citizenship Oct. 9, 1854, also in New York County (Manhattan), NY.   !OCCUPATION: According to the New York Directories he was a shoemaker and shoe manufacturer. If that were he in the S.F. city directories, he was also a shoemaker and manufacturer of shoes.
  !RESIDENCE: While in New York City (Manhattan area), NY, every year the city directories showed him at a different street address; he was in New York from 1854 to 1866. In 1867 a John Utschig showed up in the San Francisco, CA, city directories; possibly this John or his son (who was born 1848). More in likely, it was his son, John (b. 1848).
  !OTHER: Possibly he was a world's champion rifleman when he left Europe; his accomplishments with firearms were phenomenal, according to the book "Ghost Towns of the Santa Cruz Mountains." Either he or his son (also John) was the one who was the leader of AUSTRIAN GULCH, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, CA.
