a. Note:   "On June 30, 1559 Henri II was jousting with Montgomery, not merely "watching a tournament" as you say. He was struck during the last pass of the day by the tip of Montgomery's lance which pierced his eye and entered his brain. He lived in agony till July 10th. The tournament was held to celebrate the treaty of Cateau-Cambresis and the double marriage of Henri's sister, Marguerite, to Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy and of Henri's daughter, Elizabeth, to Philip II of Spain which were part of the peace deal.
  Margaret Duffy
Henri II's great love was his long-time mistress, Diane de Poitiers, who was 20 years his senior. She was 60 at his death at 40. She was commonly thought to use the magical arts of necromancy to keep Henri II's affections. Perhaps it is not so far-fetched to believe that he was strongly attracted to Lady Janet Fleming when he first met her in 1548 and she was 46 and he 29.
So, yes Virginia ---- there is still some hope for the older ladies ---- who may yet catch a young, noble ---- or even Royal stud.
