 TOWN OF LIBERTY
 HENRY GRATZ, farmer, Sec. 26; P. O. Stitzer; was born in Germany in 1827; is a son of Eustace Gratz; he lived with his parents until 25 years old; he came to America in 1852, locating in Chicago for one and a half years; then to Indiana for four years, working on a railroad, but soon wending his way to Hazel Green, Grant Co. for four years; then on Yellowstone River for two years, returning to Hazel Green for one and a half years, and in 1865 he enlisted in the 44th W. V. I., Co. K; served seven months or until the end of the war. He was married in 1854, to Mary Kaufman, a daughter of George and Margaret Kaufman; has ten children - Louisa M., George F., August E., Mary Ann, Rosa W., Henry G., William G., Minnie, Lewis and Sophia C. Politics, Republican; has been Postmaster one term; has 160 acres of land; is a member of the Evangelical Church.

  Henry came to the United States in 1852, first to Chicago, Illinois, and one year later to Indiana. In Indiana he worked for a railroad, and after 4 years he came to Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, he first located at Hazel Green where he spent 4 years, then moving to the Yellowstone river vicinity in Lafayette Co., Wisconsin. In 1865 he enlisted in Company K of the the 44th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Company K joined the rest of the Regiment at Nashville, Tennessee in February 1865. the 44th Wisconsin was on post and guard duty at Nashville until April 3, 1865, when they were sent to Paducah, Kentucky where they were assigned picket duty until August 28, 1865 when they were mustered out of service. He was a Republican, served one term as Postmaster, was a member of the Evangelical Church, and owned 160 acres of land.
  Henry and his family are in the 1860 census for Fayette Twp., Lafayette Co., Wisconsin. His occupation is given as farm laborer. He and his family are listed next to the family of his brother, Casper Gratz.
