Note: William Gratz came to the U.S. at an early age to avoid service in the German Army. In this country, he lived near Boscobel, Grant Co., Wisconsin where he married Anna Schreiber in 1857. In 1884 they moved to Dakota Territory near Flandreau. In 1891 they moved to a farm in Boyd Co., Nebraska, near Mankato, 2.5 miles southeast of Butte, Nebraska. The family had close ties to Mason City, Iowa. After the death of his wife in 1899, William continued on his Boyd Co. farm until 1910, when he retired. From that time until his death, he made his home with his children. He died in 1921 at Winner, South Dakota in the home of his daughter Rosa.
