Note: On May 12, 2003, Harold won $5,000 at the Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino, Dubuque, Iowa on a slot machine. His picture, with his winning check, was in the Casino's magazine. Johnson, age 80, of Darlington, died on Thursday, April 29, 2010, at the Lafayette County Manor, Darlington after a short battle with cancer. Harold was born March 6, 1930, in the Wisconsin General Hospital, Madison, the son of Howard S. and Olive J. (Tyson) Johnson of rural Lafayette County. He graduated from Darlington High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1951-53 with a tour in Germany. He worked for Ruef Construction, Darlington as a bulldozer operator and then for many years for the Lafayette County Highway Department until his retirement. He lived on his small farm in the Calamine area for more than 50 years where, in later years, he converted much of the farm to managed forest. His farm was his pride and joy, and largely due to the efforts of his nephew, Steve Thomas and Steve's wife, Patti, Harold was able to be at home on his farm until a few weeks before his death. He was an avid bass fisherman and enjoyed his trips to the casino in Dubuque, Iowa with his buddie He is survived by his nephews, David (Lynda) Thomas and Russell (Sue) Thomas of Madison, Steve (Patti) Thomas of Mineral Point, and Mark (Kelly Gundlach) Thomas of Fitchburg; many cousins and friends; and his best buddy, Mickey McKeon of Darlington. Harold was preceded in death by an infant brother, Donald; his parents; his sister, Elaine (Johnson) Thomas; and his brother-in-law, Jack Thomas. A graveside service will be held at a later date for family, relatives and friends at Union Grove Cemetery, Darlington. The Steil Camacho Funeral Home, 206 E. Johnson will be held for family, relatives and friends at 1 p.m., Sunday, June 6 at Union Grove Cemetery, Darlington.
