Notes
a. Note:   We believe his baptism name was Jens Jensen Rousing. In the LDS Mormon records online, the last name was transcribed as "Rausing."
The true origin of John R. Johnson and his ancestors has been a mystery for some time. I believe that Tim Hansmann, son-in-law of Diane (Bennett) Hastert, who is a grand-daughter of John R. Johnson, solved the mystery through excellent detective work and informed me of the results in the following email on Dec. 7, 2005.

 Hi David,
I think I have solved the John R. Johnson thing! Forgive me if I'm a bit excited and start to ramble. I am also sending a couple of files that hope give some proof, or at least some new leads.
I received a rogue family tree from Diane (Bennett) Hastert, and she thought it was relatives (she said cousins) who she or her mother remembered visiting when young. I never knew what to do with it, since none of the names looked familiar and I didn't know much about the Danish Patronymic name tradition. After pulling John Johnson's application for citizenship from Darlington, it has his place of birth as Voldby, which is a fairly small parish north of Grenaa. Also, it stated his birth again as August 9th, 1870. John always seemed to be good with days, but his years never add up whether it was on census forms for birthdates or his application for when he arrived in the country and which ship he came in on. So with these two items, I tried a new tack searching for the nephew in Iowa.
The couple for whom the family tree is for is Anton Marius Rasmussen and Severine Jensen Rousing. The Jensen part was promising. They were just a bit older than John, so I thought there could be three possibilities - that John's mother was a Rasmussen or Rousing, or that Severine Jensen Rousing
was John's sister. The children of Anton and Severine were listed (there were ten), and so I took the oldest because he had the most unique name (Sophus). Guess who was living in Emmetsburg, Iowa! Dumb luck. When I finally found him in the 1920 census (they had his name spelled wrong), another dumb luck - Dwight Johnson, John and Effie Johnson's son, was living with them! Felt pretty good. So I went to the Danish Archives online (http://www.arkivalieronline.dk/) and found Severine Jensen Rousing in the Voldby church books for the date on the family tree. She was there in Voldby! So I went forward, and who did I find on August 9th, 1868 - Jens Jensen Rousing, son of Christen Jensen Rousing and Ane Marie Sorensdatter! There were no other Jens Jensen's born in the 1865-1875 range on that
date in Voldby (trust me, I looked at almost every single page of the church book from 1860 to 1880), and I feel really good that it is him. I wonder if the R in John R. Johnson is for Rousing?
Let me know what you think. Hope you have Happy Holidays!

 > I have had the same thought as you about trying to trace John Johnson's relatives in this country. If his nephews in Emmetsburg, Iowa were sons of a brother, they would have the same surname as John which we think is Jensen. When I checked the early census records for Emmetsburg, there were several Jensen's listed. I need to find out if there are any Jensens currently in Emmetsburg and write to them to see if they know whether or not they are relatives. This is just something else I need to do.
 > The names of his parents, Chris and Mary, are on the record of his marriage that I found on microfiche at the WI State Historical Society library in Madison. I don't know if it is correct or not.

 >> Thanks again, and hope you had a great trip out east. I noticed in John Johnson's obituary that he had that you had in your file that he had nephews in Emmetsburg, Iowa, two nieces in Plainfield, New Jersey, and two sisters in Denmark. Were names ever mentioned? I am still trying to track down his mother's name, and was wondering if you ever came across the names of his siblings? Might be a lead.
 Best,

In 1912 he took out his second citizenship papers in Darlington, Wis. At that time he changed his name to John Johnson."

Information about the farm rented by John R. Johnson sent to Dave Thomas by Geri (Malott) Hirsbrunner on March 29, 2003 with a photo of the farm. The farm is located in the southwestern portion of Darlington Twp., Lafayette Co., Wisconsin in either sections 19 & 20 or section 22. - "This is the last farm where Grandpa Johnson lived. He died here. He and uncle Clarence [Johnson] rented from F.L. Roy & Sons. Your Dad and Mom [Jack and Elaine (Johnson) Thomas] should know where this is. Harold Huntington owns it now. Johnny [Hirsbrunner] and I rented it from Stillie & Clarence Roy in 1946 (I think). We bought it several years later. We raised all five of our kids here. Then we sold it (1969) to Harold Huntington. The house burned last fall. No one was living in it, but Ronald Johnson was the last one to live in it."
