Tenn.; in 1830, moved to Illinois with his father John Ethridge, and a family of seven children, of whom he was the youngest; they lived in Madison Co., and Peter then struck out for La Fayette Co., Wis.; In 1839, worked for Peter Parkinson, Sr., and then learned the mason trade, at which he has worked since; In 1851 and 1852, got possession of his present farm, and now owns 139 acres. He married Miss Abigail Rawdon, of Ohio, in 1884; their children number ten - Mary Jane, now Mrs. A. Eaton; Martha M., now Mrs. J. Mattig [Matley]; Margaret E., now Mrs. H. Andrews; James H., deceased; Adelphia L., John S., Emery F., Emma R., Hattie A., and William A. Mr. Ethridge has held school office, and is a Republican. Death date on tombstone is March 22, 1895. Deceased was born in Smith county, Tenn., Mch. 1st 1822. Ten years afterward he removed to this state, and has been a continuous resident here for more than 63 years. In 1844 he was united in marriage to Abigail Rawdon. Ten children blessed their union, nine of which are living, viz. Mrs. Nancy Eaton of Iowa, Mrs. Martha Matley of Darlington, Mrs. Margaret Andrews of Lamont, Mrs. Adelpha Lymburn, Mrs Emma Alderman and Mrs. Hattie Hungerford of Mauston, John Ethridge of Iowa, Emery Ethridge of Dak. and William Ethridge of Darlington. Deceased was of the rugged, sturdy type of our early pioneers. He was by nature scrupulously honest, and fearless and outspoken in his opinions. A kind neighbor and a loving husband and father, he will be sadly missed by his large circle of relatives and friends. The funeral was held on Tuesday, the remains being interred in the Fayette cemetery, Rev. Sinclair officiating. The aged widow and family have the sympathy of the community, in their affliction. Peck Will of Peter Ethridge: I, Peter Ethridge, of Darlington, Lafayette Co., Wi. being of sound mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills, bequests and devices by me made. 1. I will and direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid by my executor out of my personal estate. 2. I hereby will and devise to my son William A. Ethridge, Lot three (3) in Block three (3) in Ellisons Addition to the City of Darlington, to have and to hold to his heirs and assigns forever. 3. All the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate and property, real, personal or mixed of whatever kind, name or nature and wheresoever in nature situate, I hereby give, devise and bequeath to my beloved wife, Abigail Ethridge; to have, hold, use and enjoy the same, during her natural life. 4. On the death of my said wife, Abigail Ethridge, it is my will and I hereby direct that all my estate and property, real, personal, or mixed of whatsoever name, kind or nature and wheresoever situate, shall descend, to and be divided among my six daughters, Mary Jane Eaton, Martha Matley, Margaret Andrews, Adelphia Limbern, Emma Alderman and Hattie Hungerford and my three sons, John S. Ethridge, Emery F. Ethridge and William A. Ethridge, share and share alike - to each a one ninth part thereof - with the following exceptions: my son John S. shall have three hundred twelve, ($312.), my son Emery F. two hundred and sixteen, ($216.) and my daughter Martha Matley fifty ($50.00) dollars less than their one ninth share, as I have advanced them those amounts, and the funds thus created shall be divided equally among my other six children. I do hereby constitute and appoint my friend Anah West, executor of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have unto set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of Sept. AD 1894.
