Note: He married Hannah Dawson (1848-1929). He was a miner for awhile, but after their marriage he became a farmer. They lived four miles east of Shullsburg [Lafayette Co., Wisconsin]. He helped in the construction of the Methodist church when it was built in 1867. He hauled rock that was to build it. The same church is in use today and looks wonderful. Nicholas and Hannah had four children - Isabelle, Edwin, Carrie and Roscoe. Also 3 children died in infancy. (From a letter written to a Mrs. Wozniak in Feb. 1981 by Ermine (Metcalf) Tregoning). Obituary Nicholas Tregoning Unkown Newspaper - Probably from Shullsburg, Wisconsin 1941 Oldest Native Born Resident Dies at 92 Nicholas Oliver Tregoning, son of Samuel and Grace Tregoning, was born in Shullsburg, Feb. 3, 1849, and died at his home May 22, 1941, his entire life being spent in this community. In 1871 he was married to Miss Hannah J. Dawson, and to this union seven children were born, three having died in infancy. Mrs. Tregoning died in 1929. He leaves four children: Miss Carrie at home, Mrs. Belle Tyson and Mr. Ed Tregoning of Shullsburg, and Mr. Roscoe Tregoning of Beloit, Wis.; also seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In his early youth he followed the occupation of mining and later took up farming, from which he retired in 1917. Mr. Tregoning's long life of more than ninety-two years speaks for itself in a community where everyone loved and respected him and whose kindly, friendly attitude toward everyone, will be sadly missed. To his family he leaves precious memory of untiring affection and service. Of him it may be truly said: "Kind hearts are more than coronets, And simple faith, than Norman blood." Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and 2:00 o'clock at the Methodist church, the Rev. Clarence E. Weed conducting the services. The hymns were sung by the male quartet, Robert O. Johnson, Harry Sincox, Erwin Beeck and Harry Hodgson. Burial was in the Evergreen cemetery. The pall bearers were six nephews: William Tyson, Ernest Tyson, Howard Johnson, Roy Tregoning, Orville Tregoning, and Delbert Tregoning.
