Notes
a. Note:   Grace Eustice's parents died when she was a child. Since times were hard, she had no educational advantages. In 1842, she and her foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Richards (who were relatives), came to America and settled at Potosi [Grant Co.], Wis. She worked at the Ennor Hotel until she married Samuel Tregoning on December 26, 1844. They had eleven children, five of them died in childhood. Those who survived were Nicholas, John, Prudence, Elizabeth, William Charles and Mary Ann. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Shullsburg where they lived the rest of their lives.  Miss Grace Eustice was born in Cornwall, England, May 5, l8l8, and died at her residence in this city on Thursday, February 11, 1909, aged 90 years and nine months. Her parents died when she was a child and she was left to battle with life's problems, difficulties and trials as best she could, and as she was utterly deprived of securing any educational advantages her lot was indeed hard. In the year 1842 she, in company with Mr. and Mrs. William Richards who were near relatives, emigrated to America and settled in Potosi, Wisconsin, where she secured employment at the Ennor Hotel, up to the time of her marriage to Samuel Tregoning which occurred on December 26, 1844, at Potosi, Wisconsin. Of this union eleven children were born, five of whom died in childhood. Those who were at her bedside to cheer and comfort her and to render all the assistance possible during her last illness, were Nicholas of Dunbarton, John of Monroe, Elizabeth Peters of Armour, South Dakota, Mrs. E. Rule, Prudence and William Charles all of this city, all now being present to follow the remains of their sainted mother to the silent "City of the Dead". Shortly after her marriage, she with her husband came to Shullsburg where she has constantly resided ever since. The deceased was converted to God in the parlors of this church in the year 1869, during the greatest revival of religion in the history of the church, and was during the pastorate of the late Jas. Lawson and ever after her conversion she lived a true and devoted Christian life. During her last hours of suffering she would often exclaim and raise her thin hand upward "I am going home. Meet me there." She died with the blessed assurance that she had fought a good fight and had kept the faith and would be rewarded with a crown of righteousness. Her life work is now finished, her last words of counsel and advice has fallen from her lips, her friendly hand will never again be extended to grasp ours, her accustomed chair at the fireside will forever be vacant, her life history may be briefly stated in these words: "A faithful wife, a kind and affectionate mother, a kind neighbor, a faithful Christian." The funeral obsequies were held at the M.E. Church last Sunday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. E.S. Vischer, who preached a very appropriate funeral sermon to a very large congregation. Many friends presented very beautiful floral tributes, which were placed on her casket. Music was furnished by Shirley White, John P. Williams, Leone Harker, Blanch Thompson and John W. Harker, who sang the favorite songs of the deceased. Miss Gyrlie White presided at the organ. The members of the family of the deceased wish to return their sincere thanks to all who so patiently and willingly watched at the mother's bedside both day and night during her illness. True friendship and sympathy cannot be purchased with money but is freely given to those we love. Ellsworth Harris, Harvey Andrews, E.J. Osborne, Ross White, James Skews and Fred Gundry acted as pallbearers. Interment was made in Evergreen Cemetery. The following relatives from out of town attended the funeral: Mr. and Mrs. John Tregoning, Monroe, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. John Peters, Armour, S.D.; Edwin Tregoning, Fayette; Mr. and Mrs. S. Poppo, New Diggings.
