Note: Obituary George L. Johnson Dubuque Telegraph Herald Dubuque, Iowa May 20, 1989 George L. Johnson. LANCASTER, Wis. - Services for George L. Johnson. 84, of 9096 Highway 35, U.S. 61 South, Lancaster, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Lancaster, Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Friends may call from 4 to 6 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the O'Rourke-Schwartz Funeral Home, Lancaster, where the Odd Fellows Lodge will have a service at 8 p.m. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Monday at the church. Mr. Johnson farmed in Beetown Township until moving to South Lancaster Township in 1942, where he farmed until retiring in 1960. He was born Jan. 17, 1905, in Darlington, son of John and Effie (Matley) Johnson. He died Thursday afternoon, May 18, 1989, at Lancaster Living Center. His first wife Alice died in 1980. He later married Myrna Croft Vincent on June 26,1982, Lancaster; she survives. He was a member of United Methodist Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge, 88 of Lancaster. Also surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Keith (Marilyn) Knight of Prosser, Wash., Ms. Loyce Jones of St. Paul; Mrs. Ray (Pat) Hanson of Black River Falls and Mrs. Stanley (Cheryl) Winkler of Columbia, Ill.; four stepdaughters, LaVon Scull of Dubuque, Mrs. Tom (Ruth) Currier of Burnsville, Minn., Mrs. Daniel (Kim) Roble of Dodgeville and Miss Kay Vincent of Lancaster; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandsons; three sisters, Mrs. Fremont (Marie) Bennett of Darlington, Mrs. Loretta Weber of Cuba City, Mrs. Fritz (Helen) Tuescher of Darlington; and two brothers, James "Doc" of Calamine and Chester of Darlington. Explanation of daughters listed in George's obituary (information provided by Marilyn (Johnson) Knight: 1. Marilyn and Loyce are his daughters by his first wife, Alyce. 2. LaVon, Ruth, Kim, and Kay are his step-daughters and the daughters of his second wife, Myrna, from her first marriage. 3. Pat and Cheryl are foster daughters. Their parents were Elgie and Thelma Hoffman. Elgie was a cousin of George's first wife, Alyce, and a neighbor to George and Alice Johnson. A neighbor boy entered the Elgie Hoffman home in the night in February 1956 and shot and killed both Elgie and Thelma. Pat, age 16, wrestled the gun from the killer and called the Sheriff. Alyce Johnson heard the call on the party line, and George Johnson and his daughter Loyce were the first on the scene. Pat and Cheryl, age 11 at the time, moved into the George and Alice Johnson home, George was appointed their guardian, and they have been members of the George Johnson family ever since.
