Note: The Republican Journal Darlington, Wisconsin Dec. 13, 1956 Edward Thompson, sheriff-elect of Lafayette County, announced this week that he has appointed Clarence Johnson, Darlington, as undersheriff. Obituary Clarence M. Johnson Republican Journal October 8, 1987 Clarence M. Johnson, 85, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 1987, in Lafayette Manor Nursing Home. He was born Dec. 29, 1901, in Willow Springs Township to John and Adell (Mattley) Johnson. His marriage to Florence O'Brien took place Nov. 30, 1926, in Galena. Mr. Johnson farmed during his early married life and was later employed by Lafayette County Highway Department. He was a partner in the Hofer Mining Co., Shullsburg, and later became Lafayette County's first full-time undersheriff. He retired in 1966. Survivors include his wife, Florence, Darlington; four sons, Ronald, Darlington; John, Madison; LeRoy, Union Grove; and Gaylord, Burlington; two daughters, Mrs. James (Joyce) DeMuth, Sperry, Okla; and Mrs. Eugene (Mildred) Thompson, Darlington; three brothers, James, Mineral Point; George, Lancaster; and Chester, Darlington; three sisters, Mrs. Loretta Weber, Cuba City; and Mrs. Fremont (Marie) Bennett and Mrs. Fritz (Helen) Tuescher, both of Darlington; 26 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday at Darlington United Methodist Church with the Rev. C. Phillip Burt officiating. Burial was in Union Grove Cemetery. Erickson Funeral Home, Darlington, was in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Harvey Johnson, Gregory Johnson, Lane Thompson, Rory Johnson, Lee Johnson, and Donn Johnson.
