Notes
a. Note:   Birthdate may be May 2, 1825.
Her name in Norway was "Anna Marie Andersdatter Faerden" or "Maren Andersdatter Faerden".
Information received from Jeffrey Spencer <[email protected]@yahoo.com> on Mon, June 28, 2010:
On January 15, 1847, the ship "Talbot" arrived at New Orleans. On board were a small group of Norwegians. This included Anna Marie Andersdatter Faerden and her husband, Peter Jonassen (Johnson). It also included Anna's younger sister, Maren Andersdatter Faerden. She was born May 2, 1829 [tombstone gives year of birth as 1828] at Norderhov, Buskarud District, Norway. Her given name was listed in the Norderhov Parish register as "Maren Andersdatter Faerden; daughter of Anders Gulbrandsen Faerden and Mari Sorensdatter" The name "Faerden" was used as this was the name of the farm on which she was born, and where her parents were living at the time. On the Ships List (passenger list) she is identified as "Mari Jonsen". She apparently used the name "Mary", however some of her family referred to her as "Martha", both seeming to have been derived from her true Norwegian given name, "Maren".
She came to New Orleans as this was where her sister and brother-in-law [Peter and Anna Marie Johnson] were going to live. Not long after this, she decided to move to Mineral Point, Wisconsin, to join a Norwegian settlement there. While there, she married the first time a man named Roberts. We do not know if he died, or if they were divorced. They had a son, Richard Roberts, who was born there November 8, 1848. By the early 1850's, she had moved to Mifflin, Iowa County, Wisconsin. There, she married a man named Lawson. We assume he died, as she used the name Lawson at the time of her marriage to George C. Tyson. She had a daughter, Louisa Lawson, who was born at Mifflin on November 3, 1852. Later, on October 28, 1859, she was married in Lafayette County, Wisconsin to George Crowell Tyson. They had five children together.
Mary (Martha) Anderson Tyson's mother died in Norway, although we do not have the exact date. Some years later, after all but one of his living children had immigrated to America, her father (Anders Gulbrandsen) decided to immigrate to America to be with his children there. He had been born in Buskerud District, Norway in 1782. He immigrated in 1869, and came to Blair, Washington County, Nebraska to live with his daughter, Eliza. She had married Watson Tyson, a brother of George C. Tyson. His name was Anglicized to "Anders Gilbertson", and he died at his daughter Eliza's farm home on February 28, 1871, at the age of 88 years. He was buried on the Watson Tyson lot in the Blair Cemetery.
