 Note: A Frederick Whitney and a Mary McDermott had a child Ruth Whitney Dec 24, 1894 in Providence, R.I. at the house that belonged to Lawrence Galligan
  1895 Mary left her home in Providence, Providence Co., R.I. and traveled by railroad to Pierre, Hughes Co., South Dakota
 Thomas Galligar, wrote a letter to his daughter, Roxie, saying that the Mary traveled with a trunk and the letter says it left Lawrence, Mass. in 1889 and was hauled from the rail depot by horse team to the homestead in South Dakota 40 miles over wagon trails and was carried in a two wheel trailer from there to Fruitland, Idaho. The trunk was then given to his daughter Roxie who hauled it to Salem, Oregon and then hauled back to California and then back to Idaho where it now sits in my house.

McDermott b- DEC 21, 1862 on death certificate, 19OO Census b-Sept 1864. 1915 censu listed as age 53, 1910 census listed as 27 yrs. old. 1920 census she is listed as 58, 1925 State census age 65, time of her husband death, she is listed as age 63 in 1928 listed as a heir of John Thomas Galligar, 1930 census lists her as 63 born abt 1867.
 Death Certificate says Mary was 73 YEARS, 21 DAYS old when she died.
 BORN IN 1862 IN TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS TO JOHN MCDERMOTT, AND ---------- MURPHY. Father and Mother listed as Irish, father born in Ireland and mother born at sea. Mary was a housewife.

  ON RECORD AT ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL, IT SAYS THAT MARY CAME INTO THE HOSPITAL AT AGE 71, WITH GUNSHOT WOUNDS. 3 PELLET SHOTS TO THE HEAD, 3 TO THE THIGHS, AND 1 IN THE ANKLE. APPARENTLY WHAT HAPPENED, WAS THAT THOMAS AND WILLIAM WERE SHOOTING THERE PELLET GUNS, WHEN MARY STEPPED OUT FROM BEHIND THE CHICKEN COOP. THEY RUSHED HER TO THE HOSPITAL. THE DOCTOR ATTENDED TO HER, AND SHE WAS RELEASED THE SAME DAY..
  ON FILE IS MARY DEATH CERTIFICATE IN ONIDA, SULLY COUNTY COURTHOUSE.
 ALSO ON FILE AT ST'S PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH THE FOLLOWING SAYS. MRS JOHN GALLIGAR DIED JAN. 15, 1937 IN ONIDA, SOUTH DAKOTA. SHE WAS BURIED JAN 18, 1937 AT CALVARY CEMETERY, PIERRE, SD, AND THE PAPER ALSO STATES, MARY DID NOT HAVE PRIEST BEFORE DEATH, AND THAT SHE DIED OF FLU, PNEUMONIA, BODY BROUGHT TO CALVARY CEMETERY BECAUSE OF FAMILY BURIAL PLOT.  MARY IS BURIED WITH HER HUSBAND, JOHN THOMAS GALLIGAR. PHOTO'S TAKEN AT THE PIERRE CATHOLIC CEMETARY, ONLY SHOWS A GRAVE MARKER FOR JOHN. THEIR IS NOT ONE FOR MARRY.
  Mary had a cousin named MONTE SULLIVAN according to grandchildren, but this Monte Sullivan could of also been from the Galligan side of the family.
  Obituary in the Onida watchman:
 Funeral services were held in Pierre on Monday of this week for Mrs. Mary Gallagher, of Okobojo, pioneer resident of Sully County, who passed away at the Onida hospital last friday morning after a brief illness. Mrs Galligher was seventy four years old and her death came after being brought to hte local hospital suffering from a severe attack of influenza and bronchitis the preceeding day. The services were held at ten o'clock in the morning in St. Peter and Paul's church in Pierre and burial was made in the Riverside cemetery at that place. Frank Frahm, local undertaker, was in charge of the body and the pallbearers were Clearance Culey, Cliff Connor, Mike Rivenes, Lumer Serbousek, maynard hyde, and Rolla Wilhelm.
 Mary McDermott was born in Tauton, Massachusetts. December 21, 1862, and came west with her parents when but a young girl. She came to Sully county and was united in marriage with John Gallagher, of Okobojo, in the early nineties, about ten years after Mr Gallagher had taken a homestead claim in the Okobojo community. She made her home there with her husband until his death several years ago, and since that time has continued there with her son, Will, and family, except for the past few months which she spent with her son and wife, Mr and Mrs Tom Gallagher, in Onida. Left to survive her are her two sons, Will of Okobojo, and Tom of Onida, other relatives and a host of friends who are sorry to hear of her passing.
