a. Note:   Clarence owned two Barber Shops during his lifetime. One was in a house on Kaighn Ave. in Camden, NJ. The second was in North Camden (446 Berkley St.) and run by his brother Albert. After marrying Lucy they initially lived on 1145 Clover St in Lucy's mother 's house. Later they moved to 743 Kaighn Ave. They would move to other houses (729) on Kaighn Ave finally settling at 739 Kaighn Ave. He built one of the first tubed radios in Camden, NJ. His parents were racetrack employees. He was a friend of Alain Leroy Locke (1886-1954) an educator and writer on black culture. He was an Elk. He had cousins with the last name of Payne (one was named Bertha) who lived in Haddonfield or Haddon Heights, New Jersey. Clarence met Lucy when she was visiting her sister Martha Ann in Camden, NJ. He was attracted by her beauty.
