Notes
a. Note:   Joseph Jackson initially married Refila from the British West Indies. They had a son Edward who died as a child. Joseph is described by William A Chapman as being very shrewd and intelligent. He decided to change his name to Jamrai Matunda after they separated. Refila moved to New York City where she played an instrument in a marching band for an unknown organization. Joseph looked like an east Indian with smooth skin and straight hair. Later in life, he developed a tremor and numbness in his hands. He would unknowingly burn his fingers when smoking a cigarette.
