Matilda was one of ten siblings. There were seven girls and three boys. She had a third grade church school education. Tilley was brought to Philadelphia by her husband Tolbert Searles about 1919. Tolbert died of tuberculosis two months after the birth of their only child Mattie Belle Searles. Matilda buried him in the Hosannah Baptist Church Cemetery in Modoc, SC. She was a wonderful person. She was an usher at Tenth Street Baptist Church, Camden, New Jersey. She baked a wonderful coconut iced multi-layered butter cake. She loved Okra, Rhubarb and Lawrence Welk. She had a habit of drinking her tea from the saucer which was a habit of a number of southerners. I remember and can still hear her calling me for dinner. Her voice could be so shrill that it could be easily heard over the entire neighborhood.
