Note: N1840 [jwlaters62[1].ged.FTW] Notes for HESTER FONDA: Hester was considered the first business woman in North America. There are 3 records for Hester: b. 1672, Rensselaer, Troy, NY b. 1677, Albany, NY b. 1678, Schenectady, NY Through her line, there is a painter, Gerard Douw/Dow, who had his paintings shown at the Smithsonian Institute. He was a student of Rembrandt. Kester: "Early American Families" 1580-1926 by Rev. W.A. Williams, and “Hudson Mohawk Genealogical & Family Memoirs" by Cuyler Reynolds, 1911, state that Hester is a brother of Jellis Adam Fonda, who is American motion picture actor Henry Jaynes Fonda's direct ancestor. Through her line (her grand uncle), there is a painter, Gerard Douw*,who had his paintings shown at the Smithsonian Institute and the GettyMuseum of Fine Art. He was a student of Rembrandt van Rijn. *Dutch genre and portrait painter of Leiden. The son of a glass painter, he was apprenticed to an engraver and worked from 1628 to 1631 in the studio of the young Rembrandt. Although he occasionally borrowed Rembrandt's themes, he was more detailed and meticulous in his execution. His scenes of domestic, middle-class life were tremendously popular and often imitated. Among his most famous works are Evening Light (Rijks Museum), Young Man (The Hague), The Cook(Louvre), and a self-portrait (Metropolitan Museum). ________________ DRC record: 1696 Oct. 14. Jan Jansz Van Aarnem, y.m., and Hester Fonda, y.d., both l. here ________________ On April 6, 1694, were accepted as members: Hester Fonda as, wife of Jan Dirckse. [??? Hester m. Jan Janse] Part 1, 1683?1700; Holland Society of New York (1904); Records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany, New York, 1683-1809 http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/gen/albany/part1.html ________________ Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2007 09:53:58 -0600 From: "j. gonigam" <gonigam@@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [DUTCH-COLONIES] VanArnhem Family + Fonda To: <dutch-colonies@@rootsweb.com> Dear Pam-- The marriage of Jan (Janszen) Van Aernhem and Hester Fonda is, indeed, recorded at the Albany DRC but I suspect they didn't actually live in or even very near Albany. The Van Arnams are notable in their absence from all of the censuses for Albany, Rennselaerwyck and the upper Hudson in general that I can find prior to the Revolution. Bits and pieces lead me to believe the family was centered somewhere around Hoosick by about 1740 but that conclusion is shaky. Jan (Janszen) Van Aernhem died between roughly January and October, 1708, since he is described as deceased at the baptism of son, Jan Dirck, Oct. 3 of that year. Hester Fonda appears as witness at various baptisms for many years thereafter, the last time in 1746. Records of the Albany DRC church yard show a Hester Van Arnem interred there 23 Feb., 1753. It's conceivable that this could be Hester Van Arnem, daughter of Isaac Van Arnhem and Jannetje Salisbury. However, since there is no record of that Hester after her baptism and since Hester Fonda clearly survived to an advanced age it seems likely to me that this "Hester Van Arnem" is Hester Fonda. --pete _________________________________________________________________ Mary Ann VAN ORNUM - 63 (1810-1902) & Eri KNOX - 62 (1809-1874) Mary(Ellen) KNOX - 17 (1850-1933) & Edson Alvinza CONANT * - 16(1848-1932) Eva Eliza CONANT * - 9 (1880-1949) & Thomas Singleton BATES * - 8(1884-1969) Edson Conant BATES * - 6 (1916-) & Alice Elizabeth HALKYARD * - 7(1913-1975) Theodore Halkyard BATES * - 2 (1946-) & Alice Ann GOSNELL - 3 (1947-) The Fonda line connects with the marriage of Douw Jellise Fonda(1640-1700) and Rebecca Conyn, my 7th g grandparents.
