At thefirst meeting of grantees, Isaac Van Arnhem was authorized to retain"100 acres of his old farm.: Isaac's son John Van Arhem, who had been listed on the Muster Roll of Capt. Isaac Wyman's Company at Fort Massachusettes in His Majesty's service in July 1755, was also one of the original Pownal grantees. In fact, the father and son were the only grantees who were actually residents on the land at the time of the charter in 1760. Isaac's farm, located on the land that was later to become Pownal, must have dated several years prior to John's military service. This is likely Isaac(1704); Hendrick is his nephew by his brother Jan Dirck > (Jan/Jan Dircks). Hendrick lived somewhere between Brunswick and Troy. > Willemtje Winne is probably Willempe Winne, daughter of Isaac (1704)'s > sister Rachel. > > 1767 May 17. bo. Apr. 16. Abraham, of Johannes Knoet, Jr., and Sara V. > Aarnhem. Wit.: Yzaac and Elisabeth V. Aarnhem. This is likely Isaac(1704). Sara VA was his niece (Abraham, Jan Jans, Jan > Dircks). The Knoet/Clutes lived in Albany proper at this point, however. > (It's odd here that Sara's father Abraham wasn't the witness.) ____________________________ ....the Committee for Correspondence question still seems to be open with a slight weight in favor of Isaac(1724). There is no indication Isaac(1704) was ever actually in Albany. Isaac(1745) seems kind of young for such a body, although, so too, was Thomas Jefferson for the Continental Congress. Isaac (1724), however, was of a plausible age and his father, Jan had been involved in New York politics over a period of years as assessor and collector, so perhaps in interest in government was passed along to his son. I consider Isaac(1745) to more likely be one of the Isaac Van Arnams (if this is not the same man with two different spellings) listed as a lieutenant in the Albany Militia Third Regiment http://www.fortklock.com/nymilitiaalbany3.htm [Pete G.] ____________________________ Van Aernam, Van Ernum, Van Ornam: all three spellings in the Minutes of the Albany Committee of Correspondence. Only Isaac. No other relatives/VA names Referenced in the biography of Ione Violet Goodson from the book Hollanders in America (title from memory--may be incorrect) Isaac was a signer of the of the original oath of secrecy of Albany Committee of Correspondence, Jan 27, 1777. The following site lists the names of signers, not just in Albany though that's where Isaac Van Aernam's name appears in the original list (Names of The Albany Committeeman), but from other areas, including Kinderhook and Bennington, etc. The other forms of the name appear in the minutes in lists of members present at various meetings in Albany. This Isaac Van Aernam is named as assigned to a task in the third ward, which is I assume where he lived. http://www.fortklock.com/namesalbany.htm The Book of Names, Especially Relating to The Early Palatines and the First Settlers in the Mohawk Valley Compiled and Arranged by Lou D. MacWethy, Published by The Enterprise and News, St. Johnsville, NY., 1933 Albany County: Names of The Members of The Albany Committee of Correspondence The following names of the Albany Committee and adjoining precincts is taken from the volume of minutes published by the State of New York in1925. This volume given the minutes in detail under date of eachseparate meeting. From this we have gathered all the names as theyappear in the book. While this takes us out of the Mohawk Valley anddown the Hudson we deem it proper to incorporate them into the presentwork because of their intimate relations with the Committeemen of theMohawk Valley. It was in the upper Mohawk that the far flung battleline was drawn across the wide frontier threatened by Canada at thenorth and the Iroquois from the west. As the supplies and munitionscame up the Hudson and thence to the front and as communications fromthe front passed through Albany there naturally grew up relations withcompelled their treatment as an entire group. In come instances menwill be found who belonged to two or more of these committees. Theirnames have therefore been duplicated in order that their fullactivities may be of record. Following the Albany names those of theoutlying districts north and south are added under their separatedivisions. The Oath of Secrecy appears in the Albany book and as itbreathes the spirit of the times we reproduce it in full. A carefulreading ought to present a picture of the state of the times whichcould produce an instrument of that character. The Oath of Secrecy We the subscribers do swear on the Holy Evangelists of Almighty Godthat we will no divulge or make known to any Person or Personswhomsoever (except to a Member or Members of this Board) the name ofany Member of this Committee giving his vote upon any controvertedmatter which may be debated or determined in Committee, or thearguments used by such Person or Persons upon such ControvertedSubject, and all other such matters as shall be given hereafter incharge by the chairman of this Committee to the Members to be keptsecret under the sanction of this Oath, until discharged therefrom bythis committee or a majority of the subscribers of the Survivors ofthem, or unless when called upon as a Witness in a Court of Justice.
