A serious and disgraceful array occurred here on tho evening of January 30th, in which Jacob Vanornam and his son Eugene, and Mrs. Phebe Britain and her son Francis, were par- ticipants. These parties occupy adjoining tenements belonging to the " Britain estate," and it seems something of a feud between the two families has for a long time existed, only indicated however till now, in various petty annoyances. Francis Britain was on his way for a pail of water. which led him past the door of Vanorman's shoe shop in the basement of that tenement, when he was assaulted and knocked down by Eugene Van- ornam, who came out of his shop for the purpose, returning again as soon as he had accomplished it. Britain resented the assault by breaking some of the shop windows. This brought out the younger Vanornam again, armed with a stick of wood, and followed by his father, who told him to"kill the d--n cuss! knock his brains out!” which Eugene proceeded apparently to do so far as he was able. The noise of the row brought Mrs. Britain to the rescue of her son, armed with a clothes stick. Jacob Vanornam intercepted, and knocked her down twice, effectually preventing her interference with the murderous work of Eugene, who, all this time, was pounding Britain over the head with his club with telling effect. A crowd of men and boys had collected near the scene of conflict, but with- out interfering in any way to stop it, till Sheriff Woodbury was called who happened to be near. The result of the fight was the serious injury of Francis Britain, who was badly cut and bruised about the head and face, the other participants escaping uninjured except in the tearing of clothing and slight "ruffling'1 of temper. The assault seems to have been without justification and brutal. Both Vanornams were arrested. Jacob was tried the 31st, for assaulting Mr. Britain, and fined six dollars and costs, amounting in all to about twenty-one dollars. Eugene had his examination Saturday, resulting in his being bound up for appearance at county court, with bail at one hundred and fifty dollars, which was furnished.
