 Richard L VanArnam
 Birth: Sep. 13, 1930
Scotts Mills, Marion County, Oregon, USA
 Death: Nov. 7, 1931
 Salem, Marion County, Oregon, USA
Richard's cremated remains were never taken after death and are still available at the Oregon State Hospital to anyone who is related. More information is available at http://www.oregon.gov/oha/amh/osh/pages/cremains.aspx
A book by David Maisel and a documentary by Ondi Timoner & Robert James, both entitled "Library of Dust" also provide more information.
Richard was born on September 13, 1930 in Scotts Mills, Marion County, Oregon. His parents were Jacob Levi VanArnam and Lulu May Lacey, both Oregon natives.
Richard was born with hydrocephalus, also known as "water on the brain." It is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal accumulation of cerebral fluid. In the 1930 very few shunt surgeries were successful. Richard's brother, John Jake VanArnam was 2 years older and also had congenital hydrocephalus.
John Jake was committed to the "Oregon State Institution for the Feeble Minded" in Salem, Oregon in November 1930 shortly after Richard was born. In July 30, 1931 Richard was committed to the same institution.
Oregon State Institution for the Feeble-Minded was a quasi-educational institution charged with educating the "feeble-minded" (today known as intellectually disabled). In 1933 the facility was renamed Oregon Fairview Home and in 1965 it was renamed Fairview Hospital and Training Center. It was closed in 2000.
Three months after being admitted Richard died of malnutrition and hydrocephalus at the facility on November 7, 1931 at 14 months of age.
Brother John died there in 1934 at age 6, (FAG # 120028388). His ashes have also been unclaimed. The boys' parents divorced before 1940. Their father, Jacob, died in 1971. Richard had an older sister, Maggie, who was apparently unaffected by hydrocephalus. She died in 2006 at the age of 80. Her FAG memorial is 53023187.
