Note: N1813 Jan Jansen, the Dutch Muslim pirate One of the most famous corsairs or buccaneers of 17th century Moroccowas Murat Reis, who operated from SalÈ. Murat Reis was a Dutchman fromthe city of Haarlem, and his original name was Jan Jansen. About 1615he started his career as a legal privateer for the Dutch, but soondiscovered that it was much more lucrative to become a illegal pirate.In Algiers he converted to the Islam, but soon afterwards he moved toSalÈ at the Moroccan coast, where he built a fleet of 16 ships. Fromthere Murat Reis went privateering as far as Ireland and Iceland.Although he was regarded as a criminal, he was able to visit hisfatherland twice because of a peace treaty between Morocco andHolland. They fought a common enemy: the Spanish. The Moroccan-Dutchtreaty of 1605 is celebrated this year, and that is why the famousDutch early music ensemble Camerata Trajectina chose Jan Jansen aliasMurat Reis as a subject for a Dutch-Moroccan program.
