In R. Bolling Batte's Chart Section A, he uses a number system. In his in dex cards, he uses the alphabet system to track Poythress descendants. Bo th systems generally indicate birth order, and for the most part, where t he two systems overlap they are consistent. The notable exception is Pet er Poythress [(P-1) BHA] [142 CAB]. Batte's numbering and lettering schem es for Peter are quite different. But each digit represents one generatio n, and the number/letter generally intended to show birth order whe re it is known. This database favors the letter system as it is the most p revalent system for the Poythress family. Sometimes, Batte and/or I find l ater that the birth order is different, but I remain faithful to his lette ring scheme, nonetheless. Sometimes, I add to it. As he charted many fam ilies, I sometimes add those identifying ID numbers of letters to Poythres ses or other surnamed families.
I have tried to clear up problems when they occur, but questions still rem ain. I hope to make the research more widely available, not to explo re in great detail every point of conflicting evidence.
I have chosen to highlight son John Poythress by placing him first in t he list of children while Mr. Batte usually places Jane first among the ch ildren. Most of the descendants of Jane Poythress in this database are id entified (ID) with a family heading beginning [(B-2) A] which refers in t he R. Bolling Batte system to John Bolling. He is Robert Bolling's fir st and only child by Jane Rolfe, daughter of Thomas Rolfe and Jane Poythre ss. [(B-2 )A] equals [(P-1)AAA]. Hence, those wishing to find a relations hip to Pocahontas would do well to note the [(B-2)A] among the index card s, although of course the database pedigree on line should confirm it if a ll is fully fleshed out.
For an understanding of the other family letter designation, in the libra ry of Virginia collection, the R. Bolling Batte "key" cards are usually fo und in among the first card of a new family alphabetically in a groupin

USING THIS DATABASE and R. Bolling Batte's index cards..
The Library of Virginia online collection of names is presented much the w ay one would expect in a card catalog. Many of the cards in the famili es presented in this database are to be found by looking in the grouping n earest in the alphabetical order.
To maximize the usefulness of this database to those searching on the inte rnet, I have taken the liberty of estimating some dates and adding ~ Virgi nia, to indicate the probability that a person was born, died, or spent mo st of their life in Virgina. To RBB, the place name is often assumed, b ut I find a surprising amount of traveling among all the generations, so t he ~ is meant to indicate I have not yet verified a birth or death took p lace in Virginia, and in fact, it may not have, even when a burial occurr ed there.
See more information about Mr. Batte's sources, by looking up RBB in the i ndex or clicking "RBB Source Notes" in the introductory paragraph in my he ader which accompanies each page if you are reading this on the interne t.
My hope is only to make the work of R. Bolling Batte more accessibl e. My goal with this database is not to recreate the entire Batte card co llection. The rest is up to each individual with their own needs.
I am sure that even Mr. Batte would concede that facts or new interpretati on of old facts may realign some of the families. He adjusted his work ma ny times in is own life time. By interpreting him where he is unclear, I m ay have gone too far. Each user should explore the cards and the sources t hey allude to. If I have helped you, please help others in return. I a sk only that you do not sell my work to others, nor publish it in its enti rety as your own work.
If you would like me to add your family to this database, help me with sou rces, and I will most happily consider it.
