Note: Joshua Poythress 21 or BA Write up with Trial Chart of the Descendants of Francis Poythress Prepar ed April 1977 by R. Bolling Batte found in Virginia State Library, Archiv es Division Accession Number 29493 transcribed by John M. Poythress: ( -1740), m. ______. The name of the wife of this Joshua has never been pr oved. The fact that one of his sons was named "Littlebury" suggests that s he may have been an Eppes or a Hardyman. In 1725 John Hardyman, whose moth er had been Mary Eppes 124, and whose grandmother had been Elizabeth Littl ebury, conveyed to "Joseph" Poythress 300 acres, part of the Flowerdew Hun dred Tract in Prince George. The consideration expressed was 5 shilling s, which means that it was a deed of gift. John Hardyman had actually pa id 600 pounds lawful money of England for 150 of the same 300 acres he w as now giving away. The "Joseph" named as grantee in the deed was certain ly an error in transliteration. Joshua was intended, not "Joseph". This wi ll be clear later when Joshuas grandson William (211 2) sells the same la nd to Peachy 65 years later. Why should John Hardyman give valuable land a way to Joshua Poythress? A most likely answer would be that a Joshua Poyth ress had married a close relative of John Hardyman, a daughter or a siste r. By 1725 John and Henrietta Maria Hardyman would hardly have a daught er old enough to marry. He had sisters, however. Their names do not appe ar in any known record but their existence is established by the 1726 wi ll of Littlebury Hardeman, brother of John, which leaves one shilling " to each and every one of my brothers and sisters." These circumstances, pl us the existence of a Hardyman Poythress in Prince George, bolster a growi ng suspicion that the wife of Joshua Poythress was a daughter of John Hard yman, Sr. and Mary Eppes, his wife, and thus a granddaughter of Francis a nd Elizabeth(Littlebury-Worsham) Epes. Hardyman Poythress, as yet unidenti fied, in 1809, may have been a grandson of Joshua Poythress. Joshua le ft a will dated January 17 1739 (o. s.) in which he leaves property to h is wife (but inconsiderately fails to name her), and to three sons, three d aughters, brothers William, Robert, and others.. The original will is n ow in the archives of the Virginia State Library (Accession 23849
