Notes
a. Note:   I remember my Aunt Marge quite well. Newport News was growing so fast, there were never enough "roofs" to cover the explosive population of the seaboard city. Therefore Marge, being an excellent cook, in her early life in this city operated a boarding house on 30th Street. You have to remember during 1940 average wage was only 22 cents per hour so owning a home of your own wasn't something as popular as it is today. Many of Marge's family members not only resided there during these years and enjoyed her cuisine. This talent remained and Marge and Henry continued to live in Newport News in this Virginia peninsula city. She and her sister Verna became very active members of the Seventh Day Advantist Church and took leadership positions in the church as it grew and expanded its ministry. Present family members cannot recall exactly why Marge, her Mother and Verna sought out this particular denomination. You also must remember in 1904 mast women only washed their hair once a month with a shampoo of egg yolks or Borax. My memories of my Aunt Marge must include incidents of visiting her and Uncle Henry in their spacious homes overlooking the beautiful James River. We never left without Marge insisting on preparing us just "something-to-keep-you-going." Those little tid-bits she called them came in quite handy on our trips home with my parents on our way back up to Richmond.
