Note: [Brooks.ftw] In the 1860 Census of Essex County, VA, {Reel Number 1343, Page 60, list Robert Brooks, age 33 and his occupation is given as "Farmer." Others listed in this 1860 data show Mildred , age 22, also living in the household. Other family members included: Alex D, age 6. This could have been the only spelling the enumerator could handle for Adolphus. The enumerator listed a Ro. P. age 5. This could very well have been Robert "P" Brooks. A James W, age 1 was listed and his estimated birth year was given as 1859. A Miss Betty Jane Garrett, age 10, was also included in the list of household members. She could have been a visitor, a house-keeper or a relative of Mildred's family. Census takers were not known for their accuracy. profit and loss" entrepreneur spirit was alive and well in Virginia. According to Essex County, VA court records, James winter's father, Robert Brooks, was also a cobbler. The 1850 Census for Essex County, VA (Roll 942, Page. 68) shows "Robert," age 58 and Mildred (maiden name Brizendine), age 49 living in the county. We believe these individuals to be James Winter Brooks's parents. Robert Brooks would then be Ashleigh Brooks's great-great Grandfather.
