Note: My Aunt Ruby was one of the kindest, gentlest, concerned and caring women I know. Our paths crossed frequently when I was a youngster in Newport News. There was always a treat for the kids at Aunt Ruby's house. As I grew older and moved from Newport News to other cities in Virginia with my parents, going back to visit my cousin Leon was a great adventuresom experience. Again, more treats for the kids and a lecture if our behavior didn't meet her expectations. When in college and courting in Newport News, Aunt Ruby always a place for me to put my head regardless of the hour. And, a good hot breakfast was always on the table in the morning. Sonetimes I'd bring friends by to see my Aunt and Uncle Buck. They too were always welcome. If my friends were there with me on Sunday morning, we were all invited to go to Orcut Avenue Baptist Church for Sunday School and worship. Uncle Buck, his brother, my Uncle Ott, and Aunt Ruby moved around the city but one thing remained constant - we were always welcome and there was always kind advice to go along with that "meal in the oven."
