a. Note:   The Census of 1880 - 5th Ward, Dinwiddie County/City of Petersburg, VA, shows a Joseph Scott, age 35, living in the city with Fannie A. (Price) Scott, age 31. Joseph is listed as a "painter." Children include: Willie E., age 14, Ida Mae, age 11, George, age 4, Mary Josephine, age 2. A "mother" Lucy A., age 65, is also listed in the household.
  In 1864, nine years earlier, the political situation in Petersburg was quite different. The Civil War was winding down. Lee was skirmishing with Grants troops on the outskirts of town. Sometime during the day of December 31, 1864, Joseph Scott and Fannie Price headed to the Courthouse for a wedding license. In the Courthouse Marriage Record Book, Joseph is listed as a "soldier."
