a. Note:   My great grandmother, Martha Bass Smith (widow of James Bass) married Eaton C. Smith on February 4, 1866 shortly after Eton returned from the Civil War. Martha's first husband, who also served in the Civil War, died sometime between the entrenching around Petersburg, Virginia in mid March (1865) and Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, of that same year.James Bass and Martha had two children - Harriett Martha and William James.
  Following Eton's death in 1880, Martha Smith married James Powell.
