Note: The U.S. Census of 1870 of this household list an Adolphus Brooks, age 14. His occupation was given as Farm Laborer. Larson Brooks, George Leonard Brooks' oldest son, has recently provided a newly-located summary of Brooks family vital dates. Adolphus Brooks' death is given as September 25, 1872. This would put his age at death at 16 years.
Life in rural Virginia five years after the Civil War was extrenely hard in Essex County and across the Rappahannock River in Lancaster and Richmond Counties.
