Notes
a. Note:   Vada was born in Maud, Oklahoma. Dr. Culbertson delivered her. She went to Rock Springs school when she was a child. Maud High School when she was older.
Mother and I lived with my grandparents, Charlie & Ellen Jordan. Mother worked in the fields with my grandfather. She milked the cows and worked on the car. I can remember her picking cotton and she would pull me on her cotton sack, so that I did not have to walk. Every so often we would come to a watermelon that had been planted in with the cotton, then it was break time! I'm sure this is where I acquired my taste for watermelon.
There were cows, Charlene's ducks, horses and snakes on the farm. We loved the cow, ducks, horses, and were scared to death of the snakes!
Mother accidently ran over Charlene's ducks with the car and she was broken hearted. The only up side of that story was that we got some new feather pillows.
We loved the farm. Mother bought me a calf and I loved her dearly. Sparkplug and I would go to the pear orchard together and she would let me stand on her back so that I could reach the pears for us to eat. The day came when Sparkplug wasn't on the farm anymore. A sad day indeed! I was very young at the time and did not realize that she was to be slaughtered.
I was raised with my Aunt Charlene and my Cousins Ima and Ronnie. There is only a few years difference in our ages and the farm was our playground. We climbed trees, walked the pipeline in the hollow, ate possum grapes, smoked grape vines (Charlene, Ima and Van Guin's idea), played with the animals, and waded in the creek. (Not necessarily in that order!) We went to town (Maud) every so often where we enjoyed a nickel ice cream cone from the drug store. When Ima was at home with us....Ronnie and I had to run very hard to stay up with Ima and Charlene. We were too young when the older cousins, nieces, or neighborhood boys showed up!
Mother was one of the hardest working, most honest people I have ever known. She loved her family very much, honored her Mother & Father, loved her sisters and brother. She adored babies and loved my children as much as my children loved her. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She loved Dennis Joe and me very much and would have done anything for us. She was fun loving and always ready for an adventure and a good time. Mother, Dennis, Jerry, Tim, Melanie and I went on vacation together as often as possible.
