Note: A Miscellany of Marlborough Records Volume 2 Marlborough Borough Petty Sessions Courts Depositions & Other papers 1771-1857 James HALL, shoemaker - Informant and Complaint 21 April 1853 Thomas Roff, boot and shoemaker, saith: In or about the month of January 1852 at St Peter's, James Hall then being an apprentice to Thomas Roff in his trade of a boot and shoemaker, upon whose binding the sum of 15 pound was paid and being employed as such apprentice in St Peter's, did then and there abscond from the service of Thomas Roff without his consent and without just cause and from the time he absconded to the present time has not returned to his Master's service and that to his informant's knowledge from the time he absconded till within 14 dys last past been in Marlborough and that Thomas Roff was not until on or about 13th April inst, acquainted with the residence of his aprentice but on or about 13 April, said Thomas Roff was driving out of Marlborough and saw his apprentice and spoke to him respecting his absconding, whereupon the apprentice promised to call upon him on his, Thomas Roff's return home, to come to some arrangement in the matter. Said apprentice hath no called upon him nor hath he returned to his master's service but hath wholly made default contrary to the statute provided. (sign).
