Note: Research Notes: This Vincent must be confused with another Vincent in the area at the same time period, possibly a father. Court and land records begin in 1743, which would make this Vincent 13-14 years old owning land and being summoned to court to testify or answer charges. Highly unlikely. From Jeff Miller post to the Sprouse list 25 Oct 2008 10:06PM: "The list of Vincent and Mary was collected in 1960 by an early researcher, E.K. Kirkham and submitted by Bessie Sprouse Kesley to the LDS. The record sites the following as sources: Fluvanna County, Virginia Deed book 1, pages 203 and 305 and marriage book 3 page 187." Earliest records include: Benjamin, Vincent/Vinson and wife Mary, Jeremiah and Charles SPROUCE/SPROUSE in Louisa County 1742-46. Benjamin is in two records and Jeremiah one, only records found to date, and Vincent/Vinson and Charles can be found in records after 1770 and Vincent/Vinson up to 1800's. A Henry J. Sprouce/Sprouse appears in Albemarle records in 1751. Some people believe and evidence supports that Vincent/Vinson, Charles and Jeremiah are brothers, and Benjamin and Henry are still a mystery. There is also records found with an Elizabeth Sprouce/Sprouse arriving Virginia in 1620. "There was a John SPROUSE transported to Jamestown in 1649, with 26 women and 25 other men, for which Joseph CROSHOW [CRENSHAW] was paid 1300 acres of land. John SPROUSE and Alice SPROUSE appear to be the only persons named SPROUSE listed in FILER's passenger lists, arrived 1635. Perhaps John born ca 1665 was son... Time suggests Phillip, Vincent, and George SPROUSE were sons of John SPROUSE. Perhaps a second Vincent SPROUSE(Jr.?) fathered Lucy and Sarah SPROUSE ca 1765." 1687 Maryland, George Sprouse [Source: COLDHAM, PETER WILSON, "Settlers of Maryland 1679-1783, Consolidated Edition, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 2002 p. 627] 1782 - John Sprouce Census Fluvanna County Continental Census 1782 p. 19 23 May 1783 - Revolutionary War Bounty Records, John Spruce 1787 - John Sprouse listed in Personal Property tax list for Albemarle County with one cattle and one horse 15 Mar 1790 - Fluvanna Tax list: William Sprouse one male white over 21 John Sprouse one white male over 21 1800 - Albemarle Tax list John and John Jr. listed as taxed for 2 whites and 1 horse ******************************** 7 Jul 1807- Order Book 1806, p.227, Robert Stephens is appointed Surveyor of the Road from Charlottesville to James Jones's still house or to the place known by that name in the room of Francis Toliaferro's with the following male Labour Tytheables to keep the same in good repair, to wit, Francis Toliaferro's, Joseph Hackley's, Samuel Craig, Sally Hughes, Edward Hughes, James Mayo, John Mayo, Alexander Fretwell, Charles Jones, John Munday, William Henderson, & overseer, William Holson, John Wheeler, John Sprouse, Shadraik Battails, Benjamin Wheeler, William Wood, Overton Laurey, John Spinner, William Battales, Joseph Mayo and the said Robert Stephens--- ********************************** The following is copied from Jeff Miller's "Sprouse" web site: The purpose of this timeline is to try and gather any Sprouse (Spelling Variants) in the time frame of 1600-1850. Since the Sprouse family had been difficult family to research before 1800, I though this may help in our research of the family. It is important that each record have the source information with it. This will allow other researchers to check the information and hopefully add to it. If you can add any information for this page please email and I will add it when time permits. The area known as Louisa County would be in what is Hanover Co which is broken off from New Kent at this time. Louisa was NEVER in Goochland or Albemarle Co, only Hanover and New Kent. Michael E. See entry 1830 from the National Intelligencer. 1731 Ballinger's Creek still in Goochland. The western boundary is well beyond Ballinger's creek at this time. Since the waterways are the main transportation mode for this time period, the James River with Ballinger's creek running into it, made this very prime property. However, one history stated that civilization was getting away from waterways by the 1730s. Louisa County is still in Hanover county at this time. Michael E. Doran's ATLAS OF COUNTY BOUNDARY CHANGES IN VIRGINIA 1634-1895 1741 Ballinger's Creek is in Albemarle Co which is new and one of the western counties of Virginia Louisa is now formed and remains as it is today except for the NE section east of Rivanna River. Thomas Jefferson, Governor granted to Vinson Sprouce 1-7 acres in Albemarle on the North branches ofBALLINGER Creek.[In the RESEARCH GUIDELINES for VIRGINIA published by the FHL states in the paragraph titled Obtaining a Patent it states the following procedures that were followed in Virginia: A settler petitioned a clerk of the county for a patent. The clerk made out a warrant certificate that was sent to the secretary of the colony where it was recorded and a second certificate was made authorizing a survery. The surveyor sent his survey plat to the office of the surveyor-genearl which was established in 1623. The survey plat was returned to the secretary of the colony, and the original or a copy was kept by the surveryor-general's office. The secretary then made out the patent from the survey plat. The patent was approved by the council and governor." Because the wording of this land patent reads: "Know ye that in consideration of the Ancient Composition of fifteen shillings Sterling paid by Vinson Sprouse into the Treasury of the Commonwealth there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto the Said Vinson Sprouce a certain tract or parcel of Land containing One hundred and Seven acres by survey bearing date the Noneteenth day of November one Thousand seven hundred and Sixty......" indicates that Vinson was there, decided on his land, paid for the warrant certificate so that a survey could be made in 1760, I am placing this document on my time line in 1760 rather than in 1780 when Jefferson signed it in 1780 as others have done.] 1761 Ballingers Creek remains in Albemarle even though her boundaries are cut down and she is smaller. It states: "DEATH OF AN AGED CITIZEN- On the night of the 10th inst., old "Tandy Sprouse", probably the oldest man in the state, departed this life. The great age and eccentric habits of "Uncle Tandy" had made his name "familiar as a household word" all through this county. His age was not exactly known, but judging by the history of events he recollected, he must have been over five-score. His description of the most active engagements of the War of 1812, in which he was a soldier, was clear and acurate. For many years past, he has drawn a pension as a soldier in that struggle. He was a native, we think, of Albemarle County in the old state, and he came to Lewis County between thirty and forty years ago, and has lived nearly ever since on Timothy's Fork of Rush Run. And thus, link by link, the chain which binds the Present to the Past is breaking, and soon we shall look in vain for a hero of 1812."
