Notes
a. Note:   Edwin was christened at Salem Union Church at Gilbert. The sponsors were Math. Jorg and Sarah Makes (his maternal uncle and paternal aunt).
Edwin first lived on a farm on part of the old estate of his grandfather, John
Meckes, near Albrightsville. In 1858 the family moved north to Kidder
Township, Carbon County, near what is now Hickory Run State Park. Edwin's
father, Reuben Meckes, and his uncle, John William Meckes, operated a lumber
mill for ten years until it was probably destroyed by fire. At some time in
the 1860s Edwin went to Eldred Township and helped work his father's farm. He
was confirmed there in the Lutheran faith at St. Matthew's Church in Kunkletown
in 1870. Around 1878 he married Mary Jane Boyer.
Shortly thereafter, the young couple, their daughter Elmira, and his brother,
Simon Meckes and his family, moved to 149 Cotton Street in the Manayunk section
of Philadelphia. Edwin and his brother worked as teamsters. In 1882 Edwin and
his family returned to Monroe County at the time of death of his mother, Sally
Ann (George) Meckes. He purchased five acres from his father for $200 and
 settled down to farming.
In 1889 his father died and, as per the terms of the will, he and his brothers
and sisters from the first marriage only received $10 each. Less than a month
later, he sold the five acre farm to his uncle, Samuel W. Meckes, for $88 less
than he paid for it. Sometime between 1889 and 1894 he moved his family to
 Slatington.
In Slatington, Edwin worked as a slater in the many slate quarries near town.
Some of the children in the family worked either in the quarries or the nearby
textile mills. Late in 1902 Edwin returned to Philadelphia. Over the next
 fifteen years he lived at 2118 N. Franklin St., 2131 N. 9th St., 2214 N. 7th
St., 2256 Camac St., and 130 N. Woodstock St. He was employed at the
Stetson Company in Philadelphia as a hatter. Eventually he moved in with his
son, Milton Meckes, at 2237 W. Lehigh Ave. where he died in 1942. He is buried
at Northwood Cemetery in North Philadelphia, PA. (PA death certificate #105107)
