a. Note:   N136 Dates of birth and death and middle initial from cemetery tombstone. 1880 census gives birth year as 1861, however other siblings’ birth years are a little off on that census, too.
  John Patton was murdered. Accounts of the trial are in the Dallas Morning News between Dec 1892 and Dec. 1893.
  The Killing of John Patton. Sheriff Cabell Arrests a Party Near Reinhardt for It. Sheriff Cabell last Monday night arrested in a farm house, three miles from Reinhardt, a part named John K. Gardner, on suspicion of killing John Patton, whose remains were found last Sunday morning by the side of the railroad near Reinhardt, an account of which has been published in THE NEWS. Affidavit was made yesterday against Garduer (sic) charging him with the killing. The sheriff says that the evidence against the accused is circumstantial.

  The trial of John Gardner, charged with the murder of John Patton, was continued in Judge Burke's court yesterday. The attorneys for the state nove not yet rested.
  W. M. Porter--I knew John Patton; I married his sister. I last saw him alive about 11 o'clock on the night before he was killed. I had been with him to Johnson county to look at some land. We got back here Saturday night about 10:30. I parted with him in South Dallas about 11 o'clock or later. I don't know how much money he had with him. Just prior to that, a week before, John Patton sold some property for $4300. I don't know how much was paid him in money....
