Smith (transcribed by Cay Merryman: caym@@infowest.com) Five miles from Missouri and sixteen miles from Nebraska, Township 68, Range 41, West of the 5th P. M., with a few acres outside this limit, 5 miles North and South and about 6 miles East and West, organized from a part of Madison Township in about the year 1870 is Riverton Township. The pioneers who settled prior to the year of organization have nearly all crossed the "Great Divide" of those coming prior to 1860, the only two now living and upon the land purchased by them in 1859 and continuously their homes since, are Coleman and Isaac Smith, both passed the three quarter century mark. Among those deceased are: . . .William Burge * Subject: RE: John William Burge Date: 3/30/2005 2:36:14 AM Pacific Standard Time From: don.burge@@comcast.net To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com I am wondering where you got John's middle name William. I had never seen that before. John was a skilled wood worker (furniture, cabinets perhaps). I do not know the name of his first wife whom he married about 1829. She gave him 5 children, Elizabeth (abt 1838), William (1833), two unnamed children(1825-1846), and Rachel (1829). He married Rebecca Harrow Moss 1846 and she gave him Lucinda (1849) and Lydia Malinda (1852). He married a Sarah S. Ward almost immediately after Rebecca's death Dec 24 1857. He died about 1860 at age approx 55 in Indiana, probably Greene County. Lydia Malinda's middle name is from John's sister Malinda. He also had another sister that I haven't found the name of. His brother Alexander is my 3g-grandfather. I've wondered whether Alexander's middle name might have been Hamilton. His daughter Charity Burge married a Daniel Lee Harrah (Harrow?) b 1833 Greene Co. IN and dying at 44 Shenandoah Iowa on Dec 27 1877, 20 years almost to the day after Rebecca's death in 1857 at age 36. He could have been a nephew or maybe even a younger brother of Rebecca. Rebecca's first husband Nathaniel Moss's mother (married to Aquilla Moss) was a Sarah 'Sally' Harrah, maybe aunt of Rebecca who was born in Greenbrier Virginia. and died in Linton, Greene Co. IN in 1860. My side of the family migrated to Crawford County, Kansas, then Missouri, then Oklahoma. My g-grandfather b. 1854 was also named John, possibly for his great uncle John William. Please give me any info you may have on the Burge's. I now live outside Augusta GA in the burg of Evans. Don Burge
